We won, so that's something. I guess we won convincingly. Somehow, I'm a little underwhelmed.
Boley looked fine and did some good things. But, to be fair, Calzada, if healthy, would have done well last night, too. EMU is not even a below average football team. They're bad.
Running game was really good, OL protection was good so Boley had plenty of time and a running game he could count on all night. Yeah, he looked pretty good. But, my nagging suspicion is that he'll struggle a lot the next several games as the running game won't pick up 5 and six yards every carry and he's going to have limited time to throw with rushers in his face. Calzada thus far hasn't played well under those circumstances and I'm not confident Boley will, either.
Defense played below their standard. Too many yards, big plays vs, again, a team that is not good. A lot of missed tackles and assignments. If the D plays that way against our next few opponents, they'll score 40+ every game. Unacceptable.
Of course, we bumbled the last few minutes of the half so that EMU could cut the lead to 12. A few penalties that nullified good plays and a couple of snap exchange problems.
All in all, it was a win. But, watching USC, Vandy, TN, GA - I don't see an SEC win unless we play our A+ game at some point. I hope I'm wrong. But, beating EMU didn't move the needle for me.
I'm probably too cynical.
