That margin correlates tightly with whether a team is above or below .500 on the season.
But what I like is the improvement:
2012 -157 2-10
2013 -128 2-10
2014 -25 5-7
18% improvement in year one. 80% improvement in year two: +100 points over the course of a season.
A difference of 25 points over a season could easily be made up with a healthy, capable set of WRs, especially with a more experienced and developed QB on the field.
It could be made up with a difference in turnover margin.
It could be made up for with improvement on defense.
In this category (points scored, points given up), all of the improvement in the past 3 years has been on the offensive side of the ball. The defense has given up just about the same amount of points on the board in each of the last 3 years. A few key 3rd down stops and a couple of key turnovers alone could push the margin into positive territory. (So could a couple of key 3rd down conversions and passed completed instead of intercepted on offense.)
I think those numbers reflect the roster getting better: deeper, more experienced, more talented. And the 2015 Wildcats should be deeper, more experienced and more talented than the -25, 5-7 2014 squad was - significantly so in some places, particularly the WRs.Comment
