Memorial Day brings back memories of Austin in 1981. We’ll be fine I think, but I remember the day of that historic flood. Some are forecast for bad weather today. Mostly north of us. It rained for days before that flood.

Remembering Austin’s Memorial Day Flood when 13 people lost their lives and damage across the city was estimated at $35.5 million. This flickr album features photos collected in the City's archives, as well as photos submitted by Austinites. Share your photos, videos and story. Visit www.AustinFloods.org.

Wow! The awesome power of unchecked wind and/or water.

The Whole Foods store pictured was the start of the supermarket chain. It was a small business in the 900 block of Lamar. Now the huge flagship store is just a few blocks down, at 5th and Lamar.

Severe thunderstorm last night brought havoc to Austin. I’m supposed to be without power for multiple days. Trees snapped, power lines down, going into MacGyver mode for food, I expect.

We were hit with a long track microburst. 10 miles long and 1-2.5 miles wide.

Different kind of lineman, but the work they did to restore power is worth notice, even at 3 a.m. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8P_xT...cJCdgAo7VqN5tD Thanks, Linemen.

Yes. It came on about 2 or 3 a.m. pretty hot down here. I lost a lot of food.

Thanks. And I saw pictures of Mackville, Ky and know it’s lucky to even have a home standing.

London, which is 14 mi. north of Corbin, got hammered as well. Somerset got hit hard also.
