The Official Last Movie You Saw Thread (Part 2)

Skyscraper.

Saw this on my just-finished Florida vacay. Thought it would be Die Hard, but it's a much more complex movie--and that isn't a good thing. A lot of moving parts, backstory to set up, characters to put in place. Die Hard is the instruction manual on how to make a perfect action movie that the makers of Skyscraper didn't read. The film hits so many false beats, and even the bits that should be suspenseful are so clumsily pulled off that you're sucked out of the action.

This one's a dog. Skip.

Saw Skyscraper, and "complex" is not a word that I'd use to describe it.

I've seen better Die Hard rip-offs. I've seen worse Die Hard rip-offs. Catch it on TNT in two months.

On the other hand, "Mission: Impossible 6" is a pure adrenaline rush of awesomeness and is HIGHLY recommended. Tom Cruise might be insane, but the lengths that he is willing to go to entertain his audiences is laudable. See it ASAP, preferably on IMAX.

Saw Ant-man & Wasp... it was fine, bordering on dull or uninteresting to me. I appreciate what they tried to do with the story and I have previously advocated for superhero movies to involve something other than saving the whole world. This wasn't a great example.

I know you wasn't asking me, but the last 3 (I haven't seen the new one) Mission Impossible movies were awesome. Like the Fast and Furious framchise, the last few definitely were the best.

One of the recent Mission: Impossible movies--I'm almost positive it was Ghost Protocol--is the best action movie I've ever seen.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I started it. Thought it was going to be a popcorn flick. But that thing is unbelievable.

I've enjoyed all of them, even the much-derided second installment, which I personally thought was over-the-top, ridiculous John Woo awesomeness.

As far as legitimate quality, I think every installment since the third has been top tier, especially the fourth ("Ghost Protocol") and this most recent one. The first one was fine, but it feels nothing like the rest of the series. Brian De Palma directed that movie into the ground, and the plot was convoluted. It was literally two awesome set pieces in search of a better movie.

Trust me when I say that this new one is worth every penny. The reviews aren't lying.


And, no, I don't like the "Furious" movies. They're all lunkheaded junk. I admit enjoying "Fast Five" when I first saw it, because it switched the formula and made a pretty entertaining caper movie (and added The Rock), but since that, they've gone back to being crappy.

We saw Three Identical Strangers at Village 8. Documentary that begins as a feel-good puff piece before taking a turn into something quite bizarre, playing out almost like a nonfiction horror movie. I don't want to spoil it so I will just leave it at that. It felt longer than it needed to be, dampening some of its impact, but still recommended.

I have been hearing that its closing is imminent for at least 2 years now. I think one of the hospitals over there bought the land for their expansion plans. But for now Village 8 is still hanging on.

Took my daughter to see this. She loves sharks and had been asking to see it. I thought it would be ridiculous...but I was pleasantly surprised. It was probably worth its admission price, which is pretty rare with popcorn flicks like that.

Recommended and somehow works as a straight-up action flick. Significantly better than Skyscraper.
