    FG block

Apparently in their game today, Hal Mumme's team blocked a field goal attempt. The kicker ran over and kicked the ball again, off a bounce, and it went through the uprights. The officials called it a FG, awarding 3 points.

    Was that the right call?

When a FG attempt is blocked, do the rules allow only the blocking team to pick up the ball and advance it? Can the kicking team advance it? Can the kicking team kick it again like that? Is it supposed to be a dead ball once the kicking team touches a blocked FG kick? Could a team attempt a FG, have the kick blocked, and pick up the ball and punt it, with the defending team getting the ball where that punt (or whoever fields it) is downed?

It's funny how stuff like that follows Hal Mumme. Last year (I think it was last year, maybe the year prior) his team had the ball, 4th and long deep in its own territory. They lined up in a typical offensive formation. The ball was snapped, and the defense turned tail to cover the potential receivers going downfield. One wideout ducked back into the end zone, and the QB threw a lateral to him. He caught it, and punted a line drive right at one of the defenders who had turned to go after the receivers; the ball drilled him in the back of the helmet, and Mumme's team recovered it for a first down. It was hilarious to watch, but also a clever play call.

    Anyway, about that FG rule...?

It was not the right call. My contact said that was a live ball foul that would be declined by the defense, and would be their ball 1st and 10 from the spot. He couldn't believe they counted it.

When a field goal attempt is blocked, after the kicker's foot hits the ball, is only the defending team allowed to move the ball forward? Can the kicking team pick up the ball and advance it, or is the ball dead if someone on the kicking team touches it, or has control of it? Also, on an unsuccessful field goal attempt, where does the defending team take possession of the ball at each level (high school, college, NFL)? Lastly: what are the circumstances in which roughing the kicker will be called when the defender who makes contact with the kicker made contact with the ball first? (Thanks!)

1st. On a blocked field goal attempt, if the ball is behind the LOS, either team can advance it. But once it goes beyond the LOS, only the defense can advance it.
2nd. For NCAA, On an unsuccessful field goal attempt from inside the 20 yardline, the ball is placed at the 20. Outside the 20, team B gets the ball at the original LOS. In HS, the ball is placed at the 20 regardless of where the FG was attempted. I have no idea about the NFL.
3rd. There is no penalty if the ball is blocked before contact.
          GREAT QUESTIONS.

In the NFL it is from the spot of the kick.
