Ben Roberts writes about something I've noticed: the odd thing Kentucky has done in 2018 of not giving many scholarship offers. I tend to think that's a good thing as it suggests Cal's confident in getting his top two or three guys...but you're also playing with fire a little bit.

RJ Barrett on campus this weekend.

Chris Fisher†@ChrisFisher247
R.J. Barrett is the first 247Sports Composite No. 1 prospect to take an official visit to Kentucky since Jahlil Okafor in September of 2013.

UK's will be just as good or better....
Not sure if two of the three of Reddish, Williamson, and Barrett go to the same school...
May be a case, with them all likely playing the 3 in college, where Reddish goes to Duke, Barrett to UK, and Zion to KU.... I'm not sure any of those guys want to play with one of the other.
I still like UK to get Barrett, Zion, Quickley, and Shittu. If no Zion, then Johnson.Comment

Ben Roberts says that the "chatter" seems to show UK falling behind on a lot of these kids but he goes on to predict Kentucky gets Quickley, Shittu, and one of Williamson, Barrett, or Johnson.
I still say the lack of offers is interesting. As far as activity--visits, offers, rumors--this has been the driest of any summer I can remember. Just not a whole lot of movement where UK is concerned with these guys, and the movement there has been has been away from Kentucky.
I HOPE this doesn't mean that Cal is "losing it" in any way, or that schools have been able to recruit against him because of possible returners from this upcoming team, but rather it means that he feels good about locking up those top four guys. He has done very little in terms of throwing out offers for literally months now. That's really rare.

He definitely spoke of Duke more highly...but you never can tell with soundbites from teenagers. I've read a hundred of these "Give me your take after the visit" things and have never felt one way or the other about any of them. I've read a few where the player claimed to be "blown away" by Kentucky...only to commit somewhere else a couple months later. Usually it's just a reporter giving the kid a call when he's sitting in the airport.
Eric Bossi says Barrett will likely take all his visits before deciding.Comment

This article about Barrett's visit is a tad better from Kentucky's perspective.

Best thing for Cal to do this year is to go out and win a title, prove them all wrong and reclaim his throne as the king of recruiting. Does seem like he's starting to fall off so this year is a good chance to prove that his system and methods do work....

My opinion, Cal hasn't fallen off, but losing Orlando was a huuuge loss.Comment

Interesting point.
This current staff has gotten some huge recruits, though. (Duh.)
Last year's class was pretty incredible and probably underrated. Also were able to get in there and grab Murray two summers ago. Kevin Knox this year. So there have been some game-changers they've landed that have taken some expert recruiting.
I think what's happened is that Duke has appropriated Cal's methods, so you have them vying for the same players. You'll always have Kansas in there. Arizona has now become a player for almost all these top players, whereas they were a non-entity when Cal arrived in Lexington. And also you have schools that would have not taken one-and-dones ten years ago jumping on the train, so some of these top players (Ben Simmons, Michael Porter, Markelle Fultz, etc.) are opting to play out of the spotlight for a year and not risk being over-exposed at a place like Kentucky.
So the landscape has changed a little since 2009. Things have gotten more crowded. Still think Cal has one more superclass in him and I really believe the best chance looks like next year.Comment
