“It’s funny how the game has changed,†Bird continued. “And my thinking about it. I was really worried—back sixteen, seventeen years ago—that the little guy didn’t have a spot in the N.B.A. anymore: it was just going to be the big guards like Magic Johnson. But then players started shooting more threes and spacing the court, and everyone wants small guards now. Watching these kids play now, I’m like everybody else: Wow, man. They can really shoot! They have more freedom to get to the basket. The ball moves a little better. These kids are shooting from farther, with more accuracy. Now some teams shoot up around thirty threes a game. My era, you always think that’s the greatest era. But I’m not so sure anymore.â€Comment

I've stopped trying to explain this to him. I have better luck talking to the wall in my house. I'm glad someone took over for me. Is it really that hard to understand that only what they did while at UK matters? Not necessarily just stats. I think we are all intelligent enough to understand and create a valid argument about what a Demarcus Cousins did while at UK other than post his averages per game.Comment

I understand this is about "What they did at Kentucky" but what about the tone that has been set moving foward and what "it brings to Kentucky'' in the future??Last edited by J.Jennings; 07-21-2016, 12:27 PM.Comment

Poythress was just wildly inconsistent. If we're imagining here that we're running the teams up against each other, he might have 15 and 10 one game...then he'd follow it up with 2 and 1. The worst thing you can do in the sport of basketball is fade in and out, because you can never be counted on.
One guy I was kind of surprised wasn't taken was Ralph Beard. I know we're talking different eras, but some old guys were taken, and I heard Beard was one of the greatest of that era. And probably would've been thought of as such if not for the scandal.Comment

I think he started off slow and was actually getting better then the injury happened, never was really the same. That Louisville game in the tournament was huge, beating Louisville has to account for 4 or 5 games in my opinion.......Comment

But he'd played terribly before that last eight-minute stretch.
Kind of how his career went. He just never could quite keep the focus and intensity sustained. Confidence issue IMO. I think the best athletes are not just athletic freaks but they know they're the best on the court every time they step out on it.Comment

It was huge. He won that game for us.

You have to look at everything................Comment

If it's not the stats, then what is it??? Is it safe to say that back then the great Adolph Rupp didn't have to beg a player to come to the University of Kentucky? Calipari doesn't get a offseason, he has to fight now to stay in the loop. It's a lot more competitive recruiting now in my opinion. Even with stats and 5 stars, there is so much more data available now. When a guy is rated 5 star, he's a freak. Not all pan out but for the most part when Cal lands a top guy, the guy is a absolute freak..................................Comment

But it's not always about stats. As an example....I don't think the 2012 team wins a championship without Darius Miller on the team. He hit some really big shots. You don't think him being a senior and having been through it before helped out Davis, MKG and the other freshman? His stats- 10ppg / 3rpg / 2 apg. Not bad stats, but not great either. But he was very important.
I will even take it a step farther and say that WAY BACK WHEN old school players didn't even have the competition in high school prior to coming to college. Remember the great Damon Bailey, i don't even think he makes the 3rd team all state in high school out of Indiana now a days lol lol lol lol lol....Kyle Wiltjer supposedly wasn't good enough to play at Kentucky in the modern era but IF he played in the 60's, Dan Issell who ????? lol lol lol lol lol. Well maybe not Dan because Dan was the man in college and the NBA but you know what i mean..................

Well let's see, i pulled for the skinny country kid name John Hood and the 3 star Center out of Josh Harrellson so that makes me a racist. Seems like i am always looking for the net GREAT WHITE HOPE. Don't dare post publicly that you like a player like Kyle Wiltjer because he's a natural born scorer and shooter, he's just too white in today's game. Better not pull for Derek Willis because he aint' Kentucky material lol lol lol..Better not let the world know you was a Boston Celtics fan and Larry Bird fan, it might make you a racist lol lol lol lol lol lol.....
Brings me to this, what if there was no segreation back in the 40's, 50's, and 60's???? I wonder if some of these old school STATS look the same?? I have to believe it's a little harder to get your shot off when you have a guy that quicker, faster, can jump higher, and in most cases, alot more physical than you all up in your face. In today's game, you can't dribble the ball around and rest on offense and finish a game with the score of 40-35 lol lol lol.. Thing is, your claim to fame is shooting but this guy guarding you can do all the things you can do plus he's much more athletic than you?? On the defensive side of things, you actually have to work hard and try to guard this guy. Makes me think that after about 25 minutes in the game, maybe your a little more tired, maybe your legs are gone, maybe your shot isn't falling now????
I hate to say it, alot of our old school guys would be glorified role players in today's game....................Last edited by J.Jennings; 07-21-2016, 01:20 PM.Comment
