Brenneman used to be a smoker. I'd gather that Sullivan was as well.

Yes he did. Marty did the UK Network games in the 87-88 and 88-89 seasons. I think he was too critical for UK standards and just wasn't asked back. He did do the radio call of the 92 Duke game for Westwood One.

Chewing tobbacco causes throat and oral cancer. I have no idea if Sullivan did that. I'm sure smoking would cause it too.

Anyone watch this last night? I had never seen the game and was very curious and anxious to watch it. Those two steals early in the first half by Bobby Joe Hill did set the tone of the game. Texas Western was the aggressor from that point on. TW did have better athletes. No doubt about that. They were bigger than UK and shot the ball better. UK had a flurry of really bad turnovers in the 2nd half that eventually doomed them. TW was just the better team that night. UK did have a chance early in that game to take control but just couldn't hit shots. If they had done that who knows how this game may have ended.
You sure can tell the difference in play from then to today. The play now is more fluid and athletic overall. Although I think TW was giving people a preview of what was to come later on. One rule that was in effect was that after every common foul one foul shot was taken up until a point when the one and one came into play. I assume after seven team fouls. It wasn't like that when I started keeping up around 1971. Also jump balls were still being used and not alternating possessions. Of course no three pointers and no shot clock. Although I don't think a shot clock would have been needed in this game.
The announcer was named as Walt Sullivan. I don't think that was right. I believe that was Claude Sullivan. He had a definite pro UK tone to his announcing and the little I have heard his voice it sounded like his. I searched the Internet for a Walt Sullivan but only found references to this ESPN broadcast. Also the TV commentators as listed by WIKI said it was Bill Flemming and someone else who I forget now. That was coaches tape that was used for the broadcast. It was pretty fluid overall. All the down time during a game was cut out like going to the foul line and any other stoppages. Whoever did the dubbing in of the broadcast did a good job too.
ESPN didn't disparage UK or Rupp over the racial angle to the game. They just presented the facts that schools in the SEC,ACC and SWC had no blacks playing on their teams at the time. After this game things did open up a lot more. I thought it was kind of funny when John Saunders was interviewing Lattin about the game he kept asking how he felt at the time about being part of history. He said like all that were part of that game that nothing was said about it at the time and not much was made of it until years later. He said Bobby Joe Hill's brother did mention after the game that he thought they were the first all black starters to win a championship. Lattin said nothing had crossed his mind about until then. Overall I thought they presented it fairly and not really too much could be criticized about it.

Also as aside UK had Milo Hamilton doing the TV game for a couple of years before Marty. That's two HOF baseball announcers doing their games. Not bad.

I had seen the game before, but watched part of the game last night. One thing that stuck out for me, was all the walks that were called and I don't think they missed any. And the players just went on with the game. I would love to see that rule enforced like that in today's game.

Thanks for the report, Kevin. I missed it and didn't have it set to record. I'll check ESPN to see if it will be replayed.

That it was handled evenly and fairly was my hope - especially since Bilas was attached to it. Sounds like it was handled very well.

IIRC, it will be re-aired Sunday morning at 11 am.

Bilas had good well thought out opinions as usual. He felt like TW was probably the best team all season but was overlooked. They had the same record as UK entering this game. He felt there was no doubt they were overlooked in part because of the make up of race on that team. He said TW played a game against Seattle late in the season in which no fouls were called at all against Seattle. I wonder if that was the one game they lost?

The game seemed pretty well called. Only two officials were used at that time. if anything UK got some breaks on calls in the 2nd half but didn't really take advantage of them.

I was right. That was Claude Sullivan doing the broadcast of that game. ESPN looks really stupid for mis-identifying him. They are showing this agin on Sunday. I wonder if they will change the graphic?

Probably not, unless someone points out their mistake to them.

It has been pointed out to them. They updated their media release to reflect that it was Claude Sullivan. We will see if they take the time to change it on their actual telecast.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary, ESPN will present Texas Western’s historic victory in the 1966 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament Championship Game on Wednesday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. ET.
