ACC ain't been much the last few years. SEC has been much better. Just adding that on.Comment

Yeah, I'm not getting the Kentucky fan base or any other fan base for that matter wanting to argue that John Scheyer has been a "disappointment" or a failure. I mean, using their logic, I guess Rick Pitino was a colossal failure right up until he won the 1996 NCAA championship. Apparently a 32-4 win-loss record and a Final Four don't mean anything these days....smdh.Comment

I was talking about the same issue Cal had. Overwhelming talent with underwhelming results. Yes they are better than our results recently, but they had tons more talent. So that's what I meant by "not so sure about coaching". And I certainly didn't say their coaching was a disappointment or a failure.
Anyway, my only point in this thread was that the Duke/Amazon deal isn't really yet another reason to pile on UK. That's it.Comment

Jon Scheyer had basically less qualifications than Mark Pope when he was named the men's head basketball coach at Duke. Scheyer had NEVER been a head coach before where as Pope had been for a decade! So for Scheyer to be pulling in the type recruits (i.e. TALENT) that he has with fewer financial resources than UK and with less head coaching experience than Pope just helps reinforce that he actually is a much better coach than what Mark Pope is. Pope has more experience and finances and is attracting less talent. That pretty much speaks volumes.

Guarantee K and USA Basketball have helped

So why couldn’t Pope win the conference when he was at Utah State or BYU then? Yeah BYU moved to the Big 12 but prior to that he played in much weaker conferences.
And, after building that tourney resume Scheyer has had a ton more success in said Tourney. I hate Duke as much as the next guy but they’re lapping us.👍 1Comment

What that tells me is he is a better recruiter. Better coach is debatable.

I look at Scheyer as somewhat like Cal. I do not think he is a great X and O coach, not the type to win you the game with his play calling. But he is a top level recruiter (or at the very least knows how to use the duke brand and their resources) and is able to take a lot of elite talent and mesh them into a team. With the way duke is operating, he will talent himself into a title like Cal did with Davis in 12.
Hate duke, but I'd swap their last 4 years with ours in a heartbeat.Comment

Kind of proves the point that just about everybody who is considered a great coach had great talent. K, Knight, Rupp, Pitino, Smith, etc. weren't running scrub lineups out there. Generally, the team with the best players wins. There are exceptions, of course. And when you get deep in the tournament and the talent level kind of levels out, the motivational and actual X and O come in to play. One of the high school coaches I used to coach with used to say it's not always about exes and ohs but it's more about Jimmys and Joes.I look at Scheyer as somewhat like Cal. I agree that talent will get you far. All of the coaches you listed were also innovative in their own ways + were able to land elite type talent to fit their system.

I look at a coach like Boeheim, he coached for a million years it seemed and his X and O's got some mediocre Cuse teams pretty far. But it took a generational talent for him to win the big one.Comment
