Of course, Cal took some pretty talented teams and didn't advance far at all.....he couldn't get past St. Peter's and Oakland in the first round, and missed the tourney altogether in 3 out of his last 4 years.

There's always that. And there's always upsets. But those are the exception, not the rule. Virginia got knocked out by a 16 and then won the whole thing the following year.
Cal had run his course before his last two years here. I'm happy he moved on.👍 1Comment

Likewise. I was happy he FINALLY moved on! I was ready around COVID and when he started "kneeling" before games.
The irony about Cal is that I felt like it was time to think about looking at other options to replace Cal at the exact same time that Barnhardt decided to give Cal that "lifetime contract" (2019). Between that contract for Cal, the contract he gave Pope ("Sweet Sixteen guarantees another year") and the contract he gave himself post-retirement (that he was recently called out on and decided to decline), Barnhardt has a bad habit of handing out bad contracts.👍 2Comment

I got sour on Cal after the 2015 season. I wasn't ready for him to hit the road at that point but he blatantly cost UK a perfect season and a title. He was still winning at a pretty good clip up until the end of the 2019-2020 season. But when things went south they really went south. It was good for him and should have been good for UK when he moved on. The Cal departure and the hiring of the current staff, while related, are independent events in my opinion.

Same. Exactly . The Wisconsin loss started it and was a watershed moment for me. Almost like I knew we couldn't fire the guy, but it was all going to go downhill from there on out. I knew that and I accepted it, but it was kind of just a matter of time. The Auburn loss in the 2019 Elite 8, after owning them twice that year, was kind of the final straw for me....like, "OK, if UCLA or somebody else wants to hire this guy, I'm all for it"....only to have Barnhardt give him that ridiculous "lifetime contract" just a few months later.
