I remember thinking that we'd reach the Elite 8, but probably wouldn't make the Final Four. After all, we would be playing the #1 seed, and it was Tubby's first year. And then ,after we fell behind by 17 points with just over 9 minutes left in the second half....it didn't look good. Thankfully the payback for '92 was executed! 👍
That game to me was the most important non-title game win.

We needed that one to get over the Laettner shot. It exorcized some demons for many of us.

I think the media overlooks it. I expected to see the Padgett shot and him running back down the court after sealing the deal to be on the reel right after the Leattner shot, but of course, no one at CBS wants the Laettner shot to ever be topped or equaled, so we will never see that win truly celebrated outside the Bluegrass.

it would have been considered an epic win, but too many Duke alums in the media. They have to downplay
    it.

You're right about the Stanford win. Same with Utah, if you really think about it. The difference between the Duke win and those wins is that the Duke win was unexpected. I think most people (I speak for myself, but I believe most other people as well) expected to beat Stanford and Utah. Tough games, though, no doubt.

The really satisfying part of the Utah win was I was living in Nashville at the time and had a group of Mormon missionaries that lived across the hall in my apartment. In '97 they asked if they could come over and watch Kentucky play Arizona in the championship game, and after they did they spent the entire game rooting for Arizona. That's why the following year when they still lived across the hall and wanted to watch the championship game between Kentucky and Utah. I once again let them . I REALLY enjoyed watching Kentucky win against Utah that night!!! 😂
The way UK was playing going into the tournament, I was surprised at how those last 3 games went. I expected to beat duke, we were playing better. I knew it wasn't going to be easy, but we were the better team at that time.
Stanford was so much better than everyone thought, they gave us the biggest scare and why not fall way behind Utah? Seems to be the way things had to go, for some reason.

But yeah, those last two wins (Stanford and Utah) are very underrated. Same with Minnesota the year prior.

        Where does this one rank?

1990 win against #12 LSU with Shaq, Chris Jackson, and Stanley Roberts

I didn't see the game, but I was at Rupp Arena the following night (February 16, 1990).....Billy Joel was performing in concert. He started off by playing a couple of songs and then took a break and talked for a minute. He said "I heard you guys won a basketball game here last night?" (the crowd roared). He then said "Yeah, my alma mater's not doing so well these days, St John's " (the crowd politely booed). He then played 'My Old Kentucky Home' on the piano.

That's my memory from that....but it's a pretty cool one.
