Louisville vs. Kentucky: Game Thread

I remember the games, but not many specifics. One standout moment, though, was my dad cussing either Riddick or Rhodes like a dog — “CHOKER! WHAT A HEAD CASE!” — during a UK-ARK SEC Championship game. Can’t remember which of the two drew his ire, but I’m leaning Riddick.

We called it Catlanta but when Nolan Richardson was strutting his boots in those days their fan base was a real rival to BBN. Coolest atmosphere I’ve ever experienced as a Cat fan.

Really enjoyed seeing all the star players having lunch in the student center as well while I was there. Had an easy history class with a bunch of them. Don’t know whether they did any class work but they did show up for class.

Brutally honest, profound conversation with Toppin after the game. He was obviously going through an incredibly hard time.

Also interesting is the fact that Oscar apparently went to Cal to tell him to take it easier on certain players.

Yep. Thank God for Oscar. Maybe he can be the one that gets through to Cal about changing his ways.

The line was 22.5 and UK won by 23 points.

LOL!! Folks in Vegas are unreal sometimes. I was in the neighborhood pub with a bunch of others, mostly Cat fans. It was fun watching the crowd's reactions as the clock was winding down. At that point the outcome wasn't in doubt, but the spread sure was. Loyalty to a school meant nothing.... it was all about the spread. UL fans cheering UK baskets. UK fans cheering UL buckets.It was hilarious.

Decades ago I was a recreational gambler. I felt like I didn't have anything better to do with my time and money. It is amazing how accurate these lines usually are. Also, if you have money on a team, you'll sit glued to the tv even if you've never heard of either of the teams before.

Another thing that makes beating the oddsmakers so difficult is the possibility of fixes. I used to work with a fellow who bet on horse racing a lot, and he won a lot. I asked him what his secret was and he said I have a friend who goes to the track (I won't say which one) a lot and he circulates around keeping his eyes and ears open. He said when his friend hears "something" he calls my co-worker and tells him who to bet on.

Per an earlier discussion, that would have been Rhodes in the '95 SEC championship game. He had free throws that could have won it in regulation and missed. Cats won in overtime anyway. What a great game.

My first game ever was at Rupp Arena in the '92 SEC tournament semifinal. We played, and beat, Arkansas. It was a great atmosphere in large part due to the Arkansas fans that I'll never forget. I'll always respect Arkansas because I believe their fans are passionate and "real". (Not like Florida fans in the mid-00s or Auburn fans now. Lol.)

Wasn’t that the game Rhodes choked at the line and hung his head in disbelief and then Epps won it at the line in OT? I felt awful for Rod—you could just see how he felt he had let his team down. But it sure said something about Epps when he came through…not all about the recruiting rankings.

And absolutely about the Arkansas fans. Maybe something about less populous states without our own professional teams at the top level who really take pride in our college teams who can (normally) stand up to anyone. Hear me Cal? Get us back where we belong! Great to get guys to the league but this team means something to the whole state.
