Evaluating John Calipari's Future at Kentucky and the Top 5 Candidates to Replace Him

Gary Parrish with a breakdown on Cal's future.

Says that he thinks he'll retire at UK and coach until 2024. Top five candidates:

    1. Donovan
    2. Chris Holtmann at Ohio State
    3. Shaka Smart
    4. Eric Musselman
    5. Sean Miller

The problem with this is that if Cal does go until '24, which I doubt, then it's impossible to predict who the hot names are going to be in six years. But looking at it now, Eric Musselman is a VERY intriguing candidate if you're looking for down-the-road guys. Will Wade at LSU is another guy who I think might blow up in a couple of years.

Six years from now? Material for a legitimate article must be hard to come by right now.

The problem is all those guys are in their 50's with the exception of Shaka Smart and Holtmann.

It's highly possible that Sean Miller will have a show-cause penalty attached to him.

I'm one of those who actually thinks that Cal will be here until 2024. Seems like he got a second wind this summer, hit the halfway mark, and has just now started his downward run at Kentucky.

With that said, there is no possible way to even know who will be available/hot at that time. No sense in discussing it.

Smart and Miller NO! Just NO! Their teams are always overrated and flame out early in the tourney.

Maybe when the time comes for Cal to leave Brad Stevens has grown tired of the NBA life.

I'm indifferent to Shaka Smart but it's hard to say he always flames out early when he took friggin' VCU to the Final Four and he's only been at Texas for 2 seasons.

Yes but when next March rolls around it would've been 9 years since he got to the Final 4. That team found lightning in a bottle but those are always fleeting. Ask George Mason about that.

Its laughable to be talking about who could be coaching here six years down the road. The total landscape of coaching could change in that time. So I'm not going to go there. I do think it much more plausible now that Calipari will be here up until that time and maybe longer. It seems he has cooled on coaching in the NBA. I think he still likes all he does with these kids and feels he makes a huge difference in their lives. He also likes all the money and attention he gets at UK too. Also doesn't seem like he is burning out. Like someone else said it seems he got a 2nd wind in the last year and has gotten back to whirlwind recruiting. So he could be here a while longer and that is good thing for all of us.

At schools like VCU, you don't get to the Final Four without capturing lightning in a bottle.
