Because the members of the rules committee are paid, it seems to me they feel an obligation to "tweek" the rules in some way just to justify their income. Lately IMO, these tweeks have hurt the true game of basketball more than helped it. And, will probably continue to do so.John 3:3

Scoring is up after the last rule changes, which were probably necessary. Not sure the flow of the game is better but it was pretty bad a few years ago with all the jostling and hacking going on.
Lowering the shot clock has made marginal but still noticeable improvements IMO. Charge/block tweaks could still come in. Three-point line moved back has probably had a negligible effect, but it was probably necessary.
What else? I can't think of a college rule change that's come in recently that has been just outright negative.
The game like everything else should always be evolving. Just because something is tradition doesn't mean that it works or that's it's aesthetically pleasing to ticket buyers.
There are all kinds of things they could do with college basketball to maybe improve the quality of the product. I've always wanted
1. Four quarters, 10 minutes each
2. Six fouls until disqualification
3. Widen and lengthen the court
4. No charges in the painted area unless the offensive player is deemed out of control
5. 24-second shot clock
6. International three-point lineComment

I'm referring more to the way rules are interpreted and officials are asked to set aside the actual way a rule is written, For instance, walking and palming. These rules read the same today as it did when I was officiating, but the interpretation has changed which hurts the defense. When an offensive player is allowed to take an extra step in order to square themselves to the basket or is allowed to delay a dribble by holding the ball in their hand, good defense is compromised. I've stated many times how I feel about the new "Flex" floor coverage because it puts the C & T official in a position to call the block/charge from out on the court and all but eliminates the L who in my mind has the best look at whether the defense was set or moving at contact.

If Holtmann continues on his current tragectory and Mitch is still the AD, he will be the guy. I've been putting his name out there whenever this subject has come up for a year or so. He's from Nicholasville, is a fiery competitor, has a strong resume that I believe will only get stronger.
He will have to have demonstrated success I believe but I think he would be Mitch's #1 choice.Comment
