Mom of Duke player says NCAA system resembles 'slavery and the prison system'

So IF the NCAA does develop a system to fund and pay players, does the players at Morehead make the same as the players at Kentucky? I agree the system is flawed but once you start compensating kids in college, to me it just opens up many doors and more opportunities for corruption....
You won't get the Anthony Davis' of the world to come back to college another year, but you'd keep a lot of these kids from jumping before they're ready because they need the money.Comment

Again, i was in the military so i have always believed that a 18 year old should be allowed to go straight to the pro's, some will make it some will not. I do not think there is any chance that any rule of making basketball players committ to 3 years will ever get passed, someone will form a alternative league and profit on it before that happens..Comment

Maybe. I presume the TV contract differential is sufficient that you could justify paying a power 5 conference player more, but I can't be sure. I don't have a lot of sympathy for the 'slave labor' attitudes. Nobody's forcing these kids to get a free education playing the sport they love for maximum exposure. I don't think payment from the NCAA is the best solution, I only propose it if we MUST compensate the players in a regulated manner. I personally think the best solution is to let a player capitalize on his likeness and notoriety. Wenyen Gabriel ought to be able to earn money doing autographs around the state or appearing at basketball camps if he wants. Let a kid talk to an agent and find out his options without taking a risk of stepping in the minefield.

With everything going on, it actually makes me nervous everytime we land a top recruit afraid that something is going to come out down the road with so much corruption going on. Let the stars jump straight pro so maybe you eliminate some of the dealings under the table, i just don't know the answer to this.....Comment

I agree but here is where the snakes come out of the grass. Who pays the most for a autograph may be the one who lands to kid especially if it's prior to college and a committment. If a alum from a school puts a agent on payroll to recruit a kid to school, how does that all shake out?

I'm not trolling here, and this is an honest reply: So what? This basically happens now but with shoe companies.
I'm in full agreement here, but my focus above is more in thought of the people who aren't good enough to go pro straight out of high school (almost all of them).Comment

I'm sure there will be unseemly goings-on under a new system, but not paying players or allowing them to capitalize on their identities just preserves the status quo and the imbalance of power.👍 1Comment

One new aspect I hadn't considered is with the legalization of sports gambling, is that another temptation for NCAA athletes to try to earn some money?Comment
