    Your New Opinion on Louisville

There's an interesting topic on another board. Has the University of Louisville completely ruined your opinion on them? Did it not change? Could they do anything to make it better?

I grew up in the city limits and currently live just outside. I earned a degree from the school, worked in the Dean's office for a while, and have several connections to the University, including a personal relationship with Coach Crum. I have split feelings on them. Part of me wants them to lose every game and crumble to the ground. That's part of the rivalry. But, I also know it's good for the city when they succeed. I think if I had to sum up my feelings I would say I want them to win every game every year except for their game against UK and their first game of the tournament. I think they screwed up by keeping Padgett. They should've canned everyone related to the basketball program and started completely fresh. I hope they bring in a classy staff who does things the right way. Getting Jurich out of there was a start to a complete reboot. I do my best to remain realistic as a sports fan although I know I wear blue shaded glasses sometimes. I understand it's a rivalry but have a hard time despising the school like some do. Believe it or not there are some decent UofL fans out there (Sarcasm. Of course we all know there are good and bad fans of all sports teams.) I just hope they get the ship righted but continue to be a step behind UK. What say you?

I want Louisville to be good again, but I also want them to be an ethical program. The scumbags running the institution until last month made that impossible.

I'll wait and see, but I'd like tensions between the two schools to thaw.

I do have sentimental feelings toward UL simply because my Pop and one of my uncles(Thomas G. Leahy, UL Athletic HOF) went there. They wouldn't be pleased with what's happened. I was born in Louisville and spent most of my life here. Year after year, decade after decade all I heard from UL fans was UK and the BBN were a bunch of p#####s and chicken $hit$ because we never played them. DECADES. After a while, negative feelings surfaced.....it's human nature. Since we started playing, UK and the BBN don't look so bad in comparison. UL doesn't drive Louisville economically in ANY way, shape, or form. Important locally, yes, but they're hardly Ford, GE, UPS, Yum Brands, etc. Were Jurich and Pitino powerful? Yes, but only to a degree. As we've just witnessed, they put their pants on one leg at a time just like everyone else. Two relatively small fish in a relatively small pond. Louisville isn't NYC. Sometime in the future, I don't know when, this self inflicted mess THEY created will blow over. Until then Jurich, Pitino, and the whole shebang can KMA!!!! The whole thing, ALL OF IT, speaks for itself.

I usually don't give them a lot of thought. I think there are folks on both sides who've become weirdly obsessed with the other.

Never have agreed with the thing where UK fans go "I pull for Louisville because they're a state school." Obviously that's technically true, but I've always found UofL to be more of a Jefferson County school than a state school. Many of their fans don't really identify with the Commonwealth, and when they talk about the mission of the school it's almost always about the city. It's a very self-contained thing.

I've never felt "Kentucky pride" living in Louisville. I've been here seventeen years now. Once I get out of Louisville I immediately feel like I'm back in Kentucky. The differences are stark and I love those differences. My connection to Louisville has always been pretty distant. When I go to Lexington I feel this immediate, strong kinship with the people.

Having said that, I know many great UofL fans who just want to follow their team like we do. I've no problem with that. But I'm always baffled by the "A House Divided" thing you see in Louisville sometimes. That's always been annoying to me. I always want to say: pick a team and go all in.

For me, it's never been about the teams as much as about how I feel about the fans. Any team I dislike it's significantly due to how I feel about their fanbase, or encounters with a-holes among their fanbase.

I've got a lot of friends who are UofL fans who aren't a-holes when we play them, but I've dealt with some who were co-workers or acquaintances who were abrasive as hell. Fortunately, those have been in the minority. I've also got a few UK friends who are downright embarrassing and over the top.

I've been kind of "meh" on UofL itself. Didn't bother me that much that Pitino became their coach. I admired what he did at UK. Because of that, I was disappointed in the Sypher mess, the hooker scandal and then the Addidas stuff.

I think the root of what transpired there was Dr. Ramsey. I still think Jurich is a helluvan AD and most any school would want that tenacity. I don't think ANY AD is above the school president, interim or not and that was a big part of his downfall.

I hope they get their act together. I don't wish any ill will on the school or their athletic program, but there's a handful of fans I feel no sorrow in chuckling to myself over.

I think the "house divided" bit is more husband and wife being fans of different schools. We have that. Wife is an IU fan. But she is only anti UK when they play each other, where I have an extreme dislike for anything IU. And I would add that the daughter is quickly learning that blue is the preferred color.

Will write here what I wrote on the other site -

My son is a senior in high school and being recruited for soccer. UL has contacted him a few times and they have spoken often. I refused to go with him to visit the campus when he went. Told him if he goes there I hope he individually does great, but hope the team loses every game. (He's not considering UL for school)

This right here. Those few abrasive UL fans I know, while friends and we do things all the time together, when basketball and football season are in they can push the buttons for sure. All I heard about for YEARS were how much of a cheating school we are. Those kind of fans always have an inflated view of their programs. Well who's cheating now?

While I believe they shouldn't have hired Padgett, I find myself liking him the more I hear him. I listen to a lot of sports talk radio. In the afternoons and early evening it's mostly UL shows around here so I hear a lot of Padgett. He's mindful of what Rick had done but wants to carve out his own legacy and he seems to have a good enough head on his shoulders to do it.
