Where'd You Go to High School and Your School's Best Player

Thread has slowed down a little so I'll branch it out a little..our archival--9 miles away is Marion Co. and I now work there. Biggest basketball names at MCHS are Anthony Epps and his daughter Malaya. Both are state champs! In school it would have been blasphemy for me to root for them but after having an office there the last 19 years I know as many families there as in Washington Co.

Bell County High School (KY). Graduated in the early oughts. Don't remember/haven't heard many big basketball names before my time, but while I was there we had a couple guys named Josh Brock and Trae Winkler who were fantastic ball players. Trae, especially, was a great athlete.

Seemed like the best players went Lone Jack back in the day. Rodney Woods went to Lone Jack and was a good player at Tennessee in the early 70's. They also had player that went to Kentucky in the 50's but I can't remember his name now.

Another defunct Harlan County School was Cawood. Their best player I can remember was Phil Cox. He went to Vandy and became their all time leading scorer by the time he graduated. I played against him in grade school and you knew he was going to be a good one then. Cawood also had Greg Coldiron who went on to Morehead and was a good player there. One of the best players I ever saw that went to Cawood was Nick Sanford. He had all kinds of talent but not the brains. He didn't have the grades to get into a big school and could not stay eligible to even play long in small schools.

I had a teacher at Bell who was apparently a stud RB at Evarts. His name was Sean something. Would've played in the 80s. I think a knee injury derailed hopes of a (relatively) big time offer.

They had a really good RB, I think, in the 90's after I had left the area. I think his last name was Russell. I never saw him play but I do remember reading about him. Maybe that was him?

Yep. Sean Russell. That was him. And the 90s is probably more accurate, too. I'm aging him more than necessary.

Yea in the 80's Evarts was never any good in any sport. I was going to a lot of games back then. Evarts was always the whipping boy of the district and region. I remembered being really surprised to hear about this guy when he came along.

I take Bell Co. to be more a football school. Dudley Hilton coached Bell to several state championships. He is from Springfield. I graduated with his daughter.

Pretty sure a school buddy of mine--Brian Yankey is still coaching there in some capacity.

Oh yeah. I know all about Dudley. He actually just returned to Bell for his third or fourth stint. Spent some time at UPIKE, then another county HS, I think, and now he's back at Bell.

Think he was at Taylor Co. last year. Washington Co. was never able to bring him back home. Pretty sure we've missed our chance at this point in his career.

Kinda like Petrino without the sleaze. Wins wherever he goes. May have been a Bourbon Co. stint in there before UPIke. Anyway--wish we had the tradition you guys have in football.

Scottsburg High School in Indiana, class of 02. We didn't have any great players, but Austin High School five minutes down the road had Anthony Winchester, who would go on to star for Western Kentucky 02-06.

Scottsburg was really good at girls basketball in years past. Donna Cheatham is a coaching legend. My sister played on a few teams that lost to her.

I attended a small Catholic HS St Lawerence Academy. Our highschool rival (in the 80s) was Archbishop Mitty (10 miles from my school). From the mid 90s to present Mitty's sports programs such as women's volleyball (Olympic gold medalist Keri Walsh), basketball (Haley Jones, ESPN #6 prospect c/o 2019) and men's basketball (Aaron Gordon, Orlando Magic, 2016 Slam Dunk runner-up) have become powerhouse programs in Northern CA.

I wntmto Goodpasture Christian in Nashville Tn. Best basketball player we had was Ron Mercer, Drew Maddox was also on that team.

Fulton City High School. with all the consolodations these days, it is quite possibly the smallest school in Kentucky. Graduated in 1980. There have been a few athletes from there. One in particular, might ring a few bells around here. Terry Beadles. Played football at UK in the mid 60's, and also got a hand written letter from Adolph Rupp, asking him to walk on the Basketball team. Other players include, Anthony Parker, graduated a year ahead of me, All- American honorable mention. Played football at Memphis State, then professionally with the Memphis Showboats of the USFL, and with Calgary and BC in the CFL. a few a little younger are Randy Taylor and Homer Patton. both played football at Murray State. Arron Ferrell played basketball at UT-Martin about 13-14 years ago.
