And again we disagree. I think Tubby Smith was a good coach at Kentucky. Not a great coach, but a good one. I didn't like some of the things he did especially at the guard position, and his focus was on the defensive side. When he played Saul at PG, I had a problem with that. Sometimes I wonder if he didn't recruit a PG because his intention all along was to play Saul. However, Tubby had none of the problems his replacement had, nor did he have any of the problems facing his former boss. I don't know much about this Romar character, but .....

Why didn't he recruit more? Main reason is he is lazy. But he did recruit somewhat. he had the number 1 recruiting class in the nation twice while here. His antiquated style will not work in today's game. I played for some very good coaches and we used the ball-line, pack-line, glorified zone back in the day and did very well with it. JD Barnett pretty much invented it and did pretty well with the ball-line. Never really won anything.
But in those days there was no 3 point line and no shot clock. We wanted to push the ball out and force teams to shoot 20 foot jump shots.
And what do you mean he didn't have trouble? The whole Myron Anthony deal was trouble. Some of the guys were in night clubs with fake ID's.
But playing his son over the good of the program was the one that took the cake. And then lying about Hawkin's illness so he could keep playing that son is unforgivable.
He stole UK basketball from a generation of UK fans growing up.
But what's really odd to me is that the UK fans most critical of Cal are also the ones that hung onto tubby the longest. And many of them still do hang onto the myth of tubby.
Some idiots like matt jones want his jersey in Rupp. Sickening thought.Comment

LOOK, you have your opinion and I have mine, and no amount of what you post is going to change my mind. I think Tubby Smith was a good coach, get over it!!John 3:3

Tubby is a terrible coach. Not just for UK, for anyone. They already have him figured out at Memphis. They fired him at Minn. He would have been fired at TT but the grafter than he is got out ahead of the posse. TT.

Tubby didn't steal anything from me.
Some of my favorite teams and players were in that era.
Just like Cal, Tubby needed a lot of talent. When he didn't have the requisite talent, he lost. When Cal doesn't have it, he goes to the NIT. It's the same for literally every coach who has ever stepped foot on the sideline in this game.
Tubby had very little NBA talent. Thus we got good but not great results. I've said for years you have to have NBA players. People gripe and moan and complain and rant about the NBA, but I don't care if you stick John Wooden over there, if you don't have any pros you're going to get beat in this game more often than not.

As I stated, I had some problems with Tubby, but to come on here as if everybody who disagrees with a point of view is just wrong, is ludicrous. And the last thing we need is for folks to stop mentioning Tubby for fear of what will follow.John 3:3

I don't mind differing opinions about Tubby.
But refusing to capitalize his name is weird.
And if the Myron Anthony issue and fake ID's are a problem for you, then you couldn't possibly support John Calipari. Cal once had players steal thousands of dollars of fur coats and jewelry at Memphis.
One thing I do agree with that BJD seems to be suggesting is that there was a culture here of disorderly conduct and general "there's nobody in charge" shenanigans under Tubby. I've heard that was true.
I don't think it's any surprise that the winning percentage went way up during Chuck Hayes' time here.

Some people seem to have more animosity towards Tubby than they do Eddie Sutton or Billy Gillispie, which makes zero sense to me. Both of those guys nearly destroyed the program - Tubby sure didn't.
Tubby did well with a certain type of player - 2003-2005 were as fun for me as any year with the exception of 2012. He did well with blue collar guys who would bust their arses on defense. I have no problems saying he got lazy and needed to move on at the end of his tenure here. I would have supported firing him at the end of 2007 had he not left.

I agree that it was time for change when it happened. And I don't disagree that his style of play is not likely to be very successful now. And of course there were things he did I didn't agree with. All coaches will have those.
But to say that he was a terrible coach, stole UK basketball from a generation or that Lorenzo Romar would have been better is total lunacy. I don't have much of an opinion one way or the other about having his jersey hung at Rupp. But it certainly wouldn't bother me in the least if it is.Comment
