2nd UPDATE: Jarren Williams RECOMMITS to the University of Kentucky

The last few weeks have been a listening tour of sorts for three-star quarterback Jarren Williams, the first player from the recruiting class of 2018 to commit to Kentucky.
Williams isn’t “open” in his recruitment, per se, but he’s interested in what other college coaches have to say, and there have been quite a few bending his ear about his football future.
“It’s been good,” Williams told the Herald-Leader this week. “It’s a blessing for coaches to recognize the hard work I’ve been putting in, and my talent, and to offer me a scholarship to their school. I’m very blessed. It’s definitely a good feeling.
“It’s been building relationships and getting to know the coaches better, hearing what they have to say.”

I like this kids attitude and thinking. He said he wanted to watch the coaches and see how they coach. Don''t think I've ever heard that thinking from any other recruit.

Different sport, but oh how bad would we have been had recruits said the same thing during the BCG era?

Welp, when Alabama offered him a few weeks ago, you could feel this one coming. According to Rivals' Trent Smallwood, 2018 quarterback Jarren Williams just

As coach Stoops said, as frustrating as it is, this is all part of it. We're making strides, but we're not to the point where no one will be able to lure our recruits away.

It is what it is. Oklahoma just lost a 4 Star QB, Cameron Rising, to Texas. Alabama is losing QBs - Blake Barnett, Cooper Bateman, and David Cornwell. Tuo Tagovailoa is there behind Hurts. Tuo was considered by Scout to be the best dual threat QB in the 2017 class. He'll have to sit behind Jalen for the next two years. The real question is who is developing the QB talent at Alabama? It's not over until signing day regardless. Then there is Jarrett Stidham, Baylor, who is transferring to Auburn. All of this is a bit wild. Nobody is anywhere until signing day. In 2014 Denzil Ware recommitted from Kentucky. Glad we got him back, eventually. We just have to keep grinding away.

Opens the door for another QB to come into play. There are still a lot of QBs out there. and with 4 on campus, it is not a need this year. by the way, 18 year olds change their minds.

This is why I don't understand crowing about a "commitment" until you actually have one. Freddie Maggard refused to even evaluate this kid while he was tweeting that he was blessed by continuing to receive offers from other schools.

I don't begrudge anyone seeking the best deal form themselves but don't call it a commitment until it is.

Technically, in my opinion, when a player says they are coming to a school, that's a verbal commitment. It sounds as if you're saying don't call it a commitment until they've signed a LOI. I agree that you can't count on them being on the team until they do sign a LOI, but stating you're going to do something is a commitment, in my opinion.

Sort of. It isn't a commitment that is binding in any way, shape, or form. I get how it works, you get a "commitment" as early as you can and try to make it stick until national signing day; but the commitment is as changeable as the wind until they sign. I like hearing about who is stating their intentions to play for UK, I just think we should all temper our excitement this early in the process.

I would much prefer that football operated the way basketball does it,

A football commitment is like going steady. You can still look around or even take a gal out if your 'steady' don't get all excited about it. Now if you shut your recruiting down, then you're engaged. Not married, just engaged. Doesn't mean you can't back out, even at the altar but it's a lot better situation than going steady. Once you sign the LOI though, you're married. The only way to get out of that is if you're granted a divorce and many times that comes at a price.

Of course we should get excited when we get a commitment but don't go putting them on the depth chart. Then you're just setting yourself up for heartache.
