What a fiasco. I'm not a Barnhart hater as I think he did some good things for UK, but a $3.2M buyout ? Didn't he retire? Why the buyout? Supposedly, it's coming from 'private' funds, but why does he deserve a multi-million buyout for RETIRING? This looks like something that happens in DC, not in Lexington, KY. I'm baffled by this. It didn't seem like the university forced him out so there shouldn't be some penalty clause that's been activated. I mean, many UK fans were fed up with him due to some very questionable contracts he awarded and some other items. He retired. Something about this smells to high heaven.

I guess since they couldn't get away with giving him the high paying do nothing job this is the next best thing.Philippians 4:11-4:13👍 1 -
I've actually been a fan of Barnhart and never could understand why some people disliked him so much (I have my guesses, but I'll save them). That being said, his departure has tarnished his image some. Although, I guess you could look at it as why wouldn't he take a generous offer if he was going to retire anyway? Maybe it's UK that looks the worse. Or maybe they both look bad.👍 1Comment

I think it looks a LOT worse on UK than Mitch. Who among us would turn down someone giving us a $3+M check? Uh, none. But, I cannot fathom the reason why UK thought they needed to do that. They paid Mitch very well for over 2 decades. He decides to retire (with maybe some pushing) and UK feels obligated to give him a huge going-away present? For what, exactly? Maybe forgo the unexplainable parting gift and don't raise ticket, parking, merch, concession, et al prices? $3M doesn't go as far as it used to but it ain't chicken feed, either.👍 1Comment

I believe Mitch's AD contract included the provision that he was to get that huge money "executive in residence" (fake) job upon stepping down as AD. The one that so many people were enraged about a couple of months ago. Even though he opted to forego that post, the University still had contractual post-retirement obligations to him. The terms announced last week are a result of a settlement of those obligations. I know the whole deal seems ridiculous to most of us but I think he ended up leaving for less than what he had been promised in writing.
Mitch had a good agent. Probably Jimmy Sexton.👍 2Comment

Largeblue: so what you're saying is that it wasn't just Mitch committing to asinine contracts, it was the whole university. Well, that's comforting - not. I may need to go back to my previous employer from which I retired a couple of years ago and see if I'm owed millions and a PT job since retiring. Seems only fair to me.Comment

The crazy thing is he still going be considered a part-time employee (with an additional salary) and help with fundraising. Some people just don't know when to step away.
Barnhart was originally going to be given the title of Executive in Residence for the UK Sports and Workforce Initiative, but now, he will help with “fundraising and any other duties as assigned”, per his amended contract. His contract also states he will be listed as a part-time employee of the university, which will net him an additional salary of $40,000 annually.

I have always believed Mitch had a lot of co-conspirators when it came to the infamous Cal and Stoops buyouts. One or both of them may not have even been his idea to start with.Largeblue: so what you're saying is that it wasn't just Mitch committing to asinine contracts, it was the whole university.
