    Mitch Barnhart deal

What a fiasco. I'm not a Barnhart hater as I think he did some good things for UK, but a $3.2M buyout ? Didn't he retire? Why the buyout? Supposedly, it's coming from 'private' funds, but why does he deserve a multi-million buyout for RETIRING? This looks like something that happens in DC, not in Lexington, KY. I'm baffled by this. It didn't seem like the university forced him out so there shouldn't be some penalty clause that's been activated. I mean, many UK fans were fed up with him due to some very questionable contracts he awarded and some other items. He retired. Something about this smells to high heaven.

I guess since they couldn't get away with giving him the high paying do nothing job this is the next best thing.

I've actually been a fan of Barnhart and never could understand why some people disliked him so much (I have my guesses, but I'll save them). That being said, his departure has tarnished his image some. Although, I guess you could look at it as why wouldn't he take a generous offer if he was going to retire anyway? Maybe it's UK that looks the worse. Or maybe they both look bad.

I think it looks a LOT worse on UK than Mitch. Who among us would turn down someone giving us a $3+M check? Uh, none. But, I cannot fathom the reason why UK thought they needed to do that. They paid Mitch very well for over 2 decades. He decides to retire (with maybe some pushing) and UK feels obligated to give him a huge going-away present? For what, exactly? Maybe forgo the unexplainable parting gift and don't raise ticket, parking, merch, concession, et al prices? $3M doesn't go as far as it used to but it ain't chicken feed, either.
