Chester Allen "Chet" Wynne (1934-1937)
From the Knute Rockne Coaching Tree
Wynne lined up for Coach Rockne as the Notre Dame Irish starting fullback in 1920 and 1921. He guided Creighton as head coach for seven seasons (1923-29) before heading to Auburn. There, in his third season (1932), he coached the Tigers to a 9-0-1 record and Southern Conference title.

I think I have a few photos of him. I think he rubbed elbows with the Kennedy family of political fame!! I'll see if I can run down a picture for you if Pinterest hasn't deleted it yet. My UK football obsession got the better of me and I stretched my free account there beyond it's limits!!Comment

LOL. That’d be cool to see. He, Paul Derringer and Phil Simms are kind of our sports claims to fame. Not a bad list for a town of 2500!

I did run down a Chicles rookie card for him from the Brooklyn Dodgers but still looking for the society page photo of him and the Kennedys. Sending you the front and back of that card.
* I finally found a society photo, however it wasn't the one I was thinking about. Anyway I'll keep an eye out for that one while you enjoy this photo and it's caption from Getty Images.
- John Sims "Shipwreck" Kelly (1910-1986). What a stud, Kelly was a star athlete in college, played pro football and ended up co-owning the Brooklyn Dodgers. Married two of the most beautiful heiresses and socialites in the world, Brenda Frazier (pictured here South Hampton 1940s), and Catherine Manning. Became an undercover FBI agent and investment banker and one of the best amateur golfers in the world. Frequently found at El Morocco and the Stork Club.

Really cool stuff. Appreciate the effort. I’ve read about all the internet can tell me about the fella. Also got me reading about the character he got his nickname from.

Was that Alvin "Shipwreck" Kelly (the polesitter), by any chance?? I ran across him in my search too! I considered for a minute that a guy who plays football without a helmet might just be crazy enough to sit in a pole so high up in the air!!Comment

Yep. Interesting career choice—sitting on high poles 🤣. Paid the bills for a while. Old time Evel Knievel.Comment

Ran across this list of early coaches through Jerry Claiborne's hiring and thought I would post it in case anyone wants to see the pre-modern era coaches at a glance instead of individually. Also posting a list of captains for the same time frame, though it seems like some coaches might've had captains for each game. Not sure this list is authoritative.
