REPORT: Mark Stoops names Will Levis the starting QB for Kentucky

It appears the Kentucky Wildcats have settled on a starting QB for Week 1 vs. Louisiana Monroe.

According to KSR’s Matt Jones, head coach Mark Stoops told his team Saturday that Will Levis will be the team’s starting QB heading into the regular season.

OK, now give the others a few snaps so they stay ready.

I read CMS is having a conference at 6pm...I am partly expecting him now to announce this and also announce Gatewood or Allen entering the transfer portal.

Very unusual fo Coach Stoops to announce this call this early. Usually it's just before the first game day.

Gatewood is entering the Transfer Portal according to coach Stoops. Wow, who would ever have thought we would have a QB, that transferred here from Auburn, leaving because he couldn't win the starting job.

^ Disappointing but not surprising. How many QB injuries have we sustained during the Stoops Era? He might have still been able to win QB2 and saw playing time.

Now we know why Stoops worked so hard to convince Nick Scalzo to stay when Nick entered the transfer portal. Nick looked extremely good in some video that was posted about 6 months ago. That third string QB can become very important.

Almost surprised Allen didnt go as well. Supposedly CMS stated he could have waited another week, but then someone would have been trapped.
Levis one, Allen two...everyone else in the pile.

Hate it. But it is what it is. Best of luck to Joey Gatewood.

And just to throw this in....a poster from Georgia that is mighty solid and accurate stated on another site that Joey Gatewood is a phenomenal athlete that likely would excell at linebacker or tight end .... but not as a P5 quarterback.

We’d been hearing this all along. Seems like Gatewood wasn’t a great fit for the offense Liam Cohen runs, and quarterbacks from Penn State don’t transfer for no reason.

Sounds like Levis is the real deal and I am excited. Would love to see Gatewood and Beau Allen stick around but…it is what it is.

I am not at all surprised that Allen stayed. He is, at most, a RS freshman with 4 years of eligibility remaining. (I am not sure how last year’s COVID year impacts him.). Levis is likely a 1-year QB. This will be Allen’s team next year and, as we like to point out, one snap away from being the starter this year.

As for the Georgia fan’s comments, it seems like all fans have that kind of “insight.” I am not buying it. Joey has a decent arm, but, as we saw last year, he is pretty slow afoot. That lack of speed would not suit him as an LB or TE. He is a QB. And, entering the portal does not ALWAYS mean leaving. Nick entered and came back. Unlikely that Joey would do so, but, but maybe after sleeping on it he has a change of heart. NOT likely, but not out of the question, either.

Gatewood didn't look any better than Terry last season. Scheme had a lot to do with it, but he just looked too stiff to me. Read what you want, but there's a reason he isn't the starter. Two teams can't be wrong and FWIW, Bo Nix is NOT that good. Maybe a he needs a position change?

Judging by the comments from the coaching staff it sounds like they really like Levis's mentality as a leader as much as his skill on the field.

Looking forward to seeing Levis on the field.
Also wish Gatewood the best of luck as he explores his options.

Also sounds like it wasn't close.
