    The Texas Problem

For a school with as much history and prestige and money, Texas certainly has a poor reputation as a conference partner.
from rigging up beneficial contracts, to pushing their weight, to an outright arrogance in athletics...they got it.
In fact, that's why a lot of schools just said forget it and left the conference.

Heres part of the problem Texas has created...they've not been to a relevant game post season any since they won it all quite a few years ago.

Media now reports that certain NFL teams, GMs, coaches have a category they call the Texas attitude....plenty of talent, lot of swagger, lot of attitude....but not built for the long haul, hard to develop, and questionable work ethic.

Texas gets talent. Tons of it. All the time. But there have been a string of pretty good coaches that havent brought the Longhorns back to glory, and that revolving door is starting to look like....well...Tennessee.

Writers agree the Texas athletic department will have to have a serious attitude change going into the SEC...or Big10 if that happened. They are no longer in the position to get what they want when they want it. There are already 4 SEC teams that are far better, and one from their own state that has rebuilt for SEC football.

Most media analysts when pushed say the Longhorns as it stands today may be the 7th best team in the SEC....
    Maybe. No higher.

When the league meets Thursday I think it would be hilarious if Sankey took A&M aside and told them they were the watchdog over Texas....just to make sure they remember they're the new kids in school now, and there are a bunch of established bullies in front of them.

Doubt Sankey can appoint A&M the watchdogs of Texas at this point. Sounds like he and all the other schools worked this out while hiding it from A&M till the news broke.

So much oil money behind UT. They’ve been driving the bus in the Big12 whether they’re a contender or not. Much like Notre Dame not having to cater to anyone. ND is put in the playoffs on a regular basis only to get thumped. Money talks more than wins.

I’m a Longhorn alum, and have been a Texas football fan since the Darrell Royal days. In college football, Kentucky and Texas are the only teams I care about. Suffered through a few Ags in the family. Texas has history and classy fans. I’d look forward to Austin being a college town again, like it was before the growth. If a move to the SEC brings that back, I welcome it. If TAMU hangs on to wanting to be the only SEC team in the state, that doesn’t surprise me. Oklahoma, I have no opinion anymore.

I don’t know how many seats are available to visiting fans at UT football games—some, I’m sure per conference agreements—but by all accounts (I’ve never been there) it would be a fantastic city to bring into the mix for going to away games.

I saw a report that by some estimates the SEC could rake in $1.3 billion with Texas and Oklahoma - just a staggering amount of money. Not that the SEC doesn't already bring in loads of cash, but way more with Texas in the fold.

It will be a wakeup call for Texas though because they will not be in the drivers seat anymore or the position to dictate terms. They have a new coach and we'll see how that turns out, but as of next year they'd be maybe 6th or 7th in the league and they're entering into a league where there's a bunch of programs that are cash cows with a bunch of weight to throw around. Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, LSU and Kentucky (basketball) for that matter all generate a ton of cash and won't hesitate to tell Texas to pipe down.

My favorite place to be is Lexington, but people seem to like visiting Austin. And its proximity to one of my favorite Texas towns, San Antonio, would make it a great several day getaway.

I wonder what would happen to the Red River Rivalry game between Oklahoma and Texas at the Texas State Fair. It’s a huge, fun event. I’ve been several times and it’s wall to wall people. It’s not my favorite day to visit the fair because of the crowd, especially with children, but I’d stay the night and go back to enjoy it. They run the football from Austin to Dallas. Lots of tradition.

We already have an SEC picnic every year, with people living in Austin who are alums of SEC schools.

Speaking of revenue, a lot of people don't realize that UK's fb team generates more net annual revenue than the bb team.

UK football until VERY recently produced a ton more revenue in proportion to expenditures...which is a big reason folks are just now saying Kentucky has a football program.

In re to Caps post, every single projection I've seen about conference breakdown has Texas in the same division or pod with Oklahoma. General thought is Texas/Ou, Bama/Auburn, Florida/Georgia and the Mississippi schools will be bracketed where they have a yearly meeting.
everything else is kinda up in the air.
One reporter out of Austin stated Texas had been told they would be in the same division/pod with Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

Ahhh....politicians. oklahoma had something like that as well.

Not sure they have a ton to stand on if a federal judge looks at it.....since no one stopped A&M.

I don't think it is a fight he should fight, but the idea that U. Texas is an extension of the state has a pretty well-established legal precedent. However, I didn't think Baylor and TCU were public entities that should be the concern of the state.

Will it be weird to have two schools that go by UT and have similar ugly shades of orange for school colors?

To each their own, but I think the Longhorn’s burnt orange is a good color. Love it like Kentucky blue over UNC blue.

However, UT for both has always been problematic for me, outside of Texas. I just say UTexas when referring to Texas in SEC circles. I guess UTX and UTN would work.

I actually don't think UTenn's orange is ugly unless I'm talking to one of their fans... Same for UTexas. I wouldn't want to wear that gear, but it works as a brand. Now Florida's orange, I can't stand. I can't stand their shade of blue either come to think of it. Both colors together or individually make me want to vomit. There is no college program I'm happier I don't have to root for on the basis of colors than UFugly. Mizzou'smodern dirty yellow is a close second.
