The skill in recruiting comes from being able to ascertain talent where you hope no one else sees it. Perhaps Stoops needs some more help on the offensive side?Comment

The position is irrelevant. A program has an incentive to take a flyer on a gifted player that might turn into something special. Especially when you are also trying to get that QB's 5 star team mate. (as was the case with Walker Wood)
At worst they play scout team at best they are Tom Brady. There is no reason not to, especially if you can still get three other good QBs. (Which we had)
Fan expectations around this issue are unreasonable IMO.Comment

Perhaps, but we will agree to disagree. Filling five slots with unusable players at the qb position is a head scratcher .
This is a situation where two legitimate backups transferred out to be able to play elsewhere, then a starter and two backups are injured.
losing five players at position is bizarre.
I don't see where it is unreasonable at all for a player to expect to have a chance to compete.
1st team reps are usually split 80%/20% with starter and backup. 3rd string doesn't get first team reps. Second team reps are ~80%/20% backup and third string who may even split that 20% with the starter. I don't really know what goes on with 4th string juniors and 5th string red-shirt freshmen.
Currently, of our 8 roster spots at QB we have 5 scholarship QB's. Three of those 5 are injured. One is a talented project recruited in part to land a team mate (it didn't work) And the other one was a hometown kid and also recruited to land a teammate (It did work). It is RARE that a power 5 program has more than three QB's that can feasibly play and usually it's not more than 2 at any given moment. Third string is OFTEN someone who might be a future starter but you are hoping to red shirt.
The other three spots are walk-ons.
Walk-ons don't really matter in terms of roster spots. You take them for all kinds of reasons. A favor to a coach in an area you want to get into, a favor to a donor, a GPA booster, or locker room guy, a durable scout team player for the starting D to beat on, maybe they want to get into coaching. (Cal does this all the time with FAR fewer roster spots available) You NEVER expect them to play and many don't take ANY practice reps running the team offense. They run the opposing teams offense against our D.
Further transferring in general is more common than it used to be and MUCH more common at the QB spot. Usually only one player plays and the two back-ups if they think they are good enough may want to play. Danny Clark left for that reason (I'm not sure where he went) and Hoak thought third string at OSU was better than 2nd string here. Nothing dramatic or controversial about that.
Patrick Towels left because he didn't want to back up Drew Barker and may not have been feeling the new O coordinator. IIRC, our third string QB behind Barker and Johnson left to play somewhere else. That's part of the deal.
It isn't an issue of talent ID, it isn't an issue of player development. How the heck is ANY team supposed to keep a stable of legitimate D-1, playable QB's that runs 5 deep? It doesn't happen. Not at UGA, not at BAMA and certainly not at Kentucky.
If you don't think Terry Wilson is good enough or whatever, that is a separate issue.Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that... This isn't an issue of disagreement, it's an issue of facts.

What this whole thing boils down to is that fans are mad that our 4th and 5th string QBs aren't good enough to start for us and that our best athlete and WR might be a better QB right now than those options.

It is easy however for me to sit and second guess the staff and it isn't really fair. The injuries have made this season a wash most likely and that can't always be out recruited.Last edited by Sean; 10-04-2019, 12:38 PM.Comment

If throwing a wide receiver into the QB spot in the middle of an SEC football season is ourâ€best chance of winning†it says a lot about the state of our program right now. Bowden might make some plays against Arkansas from there because he is an unknown. Give SEC D - Coordinators a game to trend him and he will be TOAST. If we try to run him too much he will get hurt. The quarterback situation here goes more to style of play than recruiting. For whatever reason Gran is playing a (run, option, pass) type offense. He denies this but who you gonna believe , him or your Lying eyes. A big problem as I see it is we only recruit about 1 QB every 3 years or so capable of running it effectively. We DO recruit 1 or 2 pro style drop back passers every year. They languish on the bench and don’t reach their potential running an offense that isn’t suited to their skills and then ( the smart ones or the ones who actually want to play some football before they graduate) they transfer elsewhere. If I had a son who was a D1 caliber pro style Quarterback I wouldn’t let him any where near UK with its current staff. What I can’t understand is why don’t we recruit ALL RP Option QB’s since that’s what we run, if we did we would have an ACTUAL QB to put in the game instead of a receiver. Finally on the talent issue, while it is better ( than the Joker era as example) it still is subpar by SEC standards. We have ranked no better than 10th in the league by recruiting experts in what were admittedly Stoops best classes. We have no depth compared to other SEC teams with exception of Vandy because we simply aren’t getting enough blue chip players. If we are ever going to compete for the upper tier of the SEC we must get more 4 and5 star type players Every year. We can hope we strike gold with an Allen or a Snell who develop into great players but that is not a formula for long term SEC success.Comment

This may have the potential to be a big nothing burger.Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

On the contrary. I think it gives the 3rd string QB some breathing room to get some reps in in practice while Bowden may have to play one game. If Smith is able to play after the bye week, that still affords time for the backup to get more reps than he otherwise would have.

That sentence wasn't directed only at you. In general, the fan angst expressed in this and the other thread is some form of outrage or criticism that a 4th string QB isn't good enough to play. I can think of 4 "State of our program" posts based on the ability of a 4th String QB. It's silly.

Hines Ward (WR Pittsburgh Steelers) played QB some at Georgia and led them to a Peach Bowl win. In fact I think he still holds the record for total yards of offense.
Matt Jones played WR in high school and in the NFL but played QB at Arkansas and led them to 2 9 win seasons.
That's just a couple from a quick google. I have no issue with

While everyone is freaking out over the QB situation no one has mentioned that we have quit running the football. That's what I'm frustrated with. We can't throw throw the ball 30-40 times a game and expect to win. We have a good OL and two good backs, Rodriguez has the potential to replace Snell if he can learn to hold on to the ball. The run game is what has got us to three straight bowl games.👍 2Comment
