Maybe we should start a thread that's invitation only for stuff like this. Kind of like the political threads/section. Unless there already is one...

The one thing i have always respected about this site is that all that "BS" isn't allowed including 4 letter words etc. Now that doesn't mean some of us including myself don't push the limit especially after a good ol fashioned beat down by another team but even then, still try to stay within the parameters..

With that being said, i can understand the edit from the old school but on the other hand, good thing the old school doesn't surf media sites such as twitter or even facebook lol lol lol lol, we living in a different world now and unfortunately the children get exposed to alot of nonsense that's well and out of control of even the most protective parent, even prime time FREE tv uses 4 letter words....

Anyways, to hell with Penn State, we just kicked there arse and i ain't ashamed to say it

There are parts of this board where 'robust' conversation is part of it. There are other parts where we are asked to be if not civil, at least not street. Kind of one of the great thing about this particular board. Without it, it would just be a micro-copy of the mega boards.

I've often fallen into the category Lighthouse described in getting stuck on six or so heavy consonant words. After a time it loses it's shock value and turns common.

There's a difference in saying "this feels pretty good" and throwing F-bombs at people. One ruins civil discussion (which I do agree needs to be protected on this particular board), the other is a word in a sentence.

Not inherently. Unless the message includes a "sense of superiority" it by definition isn't patronizing. You can fight with the definition or the word all you like.
Patronize - treat with an apparent kindness that betrays a feeling of superiority.

I think it simply suggests a generational difference.

I would never think of protecting women from bad language, but I didn't grow up in a time--and, frankly, in a family--who would have even thought about that. Lighthouse most likely did.

Yes, it is inherently patronizing. A man insinuating a woman needs protecting from something like profanity is implying she's weaker.

In any event I'll argue about nonsense all day but this isn't the point of the thread.

I guess I come from a different time. I still hold doors open for women, I try not to swear in front of a woman be it business or out with friends for a drink. I have no problem with someone editing away things on this board. All people can come in here and read the board including kids. So I see no issue with it. As for protecting women. It is each of us our duty to protect one another, be it female, male, old, young, race, religion... whatever the case may be. Anyone who thinks not needs to possibly sit back and take a look at where this world is and how to help make it a better place. That's my 2 cents.

Protecting someone and being respectful are two different things. I don't think lighthouse should have made the intelligence comment but trying to clean up some language is fine with me. Limits are good, otherwise, we would be pretty maniacal around here., In real life, I cuss pretty bad, on here its not really necessary.

Will made a statement I will agree with in that it is in part a generational trait. My father would never use profanity of any type at home, and even most of the farm hands would seldom use the f-words even at work. I think I heard my mother use one swear word....maybe...in 58 years I knew her.
as far as patronizing, I would disagree....most men and women I knew growing up never felt either was weaker, but had different responsibilities that were equally important and valued in the family. As best as I can recall, it was generally believed that coarse language was more of a sign of disrespect than anything.

But, those were my days, in my part of the country ...

Pobilly's point is reasonable to me as well....since it IS an open free board, anyone can read, and I see no harm in areas where moderation follows a stated decorum.

It is no insult, it is a policy which for the most part all have agreed on.

If someone thinks it's an insult to NOT use profanity....

                      Well......okey dokey.

It is a selectively and loosely enforced policy. If you're going to enforce it because it's the rule then fine, but don't give BS that you're doing it out of respect for women and children. THAT is the patronizing part of it.

Getting back to UK sports because the rest of this is pointless: has there been a better week and a half for UK sports in December/January than this one? Basketball wins over North Carolina and Louisville in convincing fashion, football clinches its first 10 win season in my lifetime in a major New Year's Day bowl game over a historical powerhouse. Probably the best weekend you can get this time of year.

It has absolutely been a sweet spot. For me, the football run post-Tennessee has made the sports year great. Beating Franklin and PSU is a topper. Hoping the basketball team can bring things up even further, but the season is so long it has a lot of dips and dives still.
I think I have found a secret though....pick UK football to lose as often as possible then get the giggles when they win.

                                Lolololololol.......

We can agree that even with a membership or contributing group as small as this board currently has that we have differing backgrounds and age groups that have effect on our opinions.

                                And that's cool.

Maybe we should also agree to respect our differences while we enjoy a love of a game that brings us here

Or just ignore Dwight on this one.😁
