We absolutely STINK in our defensive backfield, which was supposed to be one of our strengths. Currently, our passing defense is rated #116 out of 130 schools. We are giving up an average of 279 yards in passing against generally mediocre QB opponents who repetedly manage "career games" against us. What's most disappointing is that Coach Stoops' background is coaching up defensive backs. Between Coach Stoops and DB coach Clikkscales, something's got to give. Your suggestions..........

While I acknowledge that our secondary has not been good, i do not agree that we have faced "generally mediocre QB opponents." With a few exceptions, most of them have been quite good. Even the EMU QB broke some kind of record last for for TD passes that was held by someone who's name escapes me but who was very good. Mizzoo and MSU and Ol Miss all had excellent QBs. The guy at USC is no slouch. The Vandy QB is very good, the freshman at UGA has improved by leaps and bounds, and then there is Jackson. The UF starter was bad, but then they bring in what's his name for 30 minutes of fame before he gets hurt and is out for the year.
Of course, none of this is to refute your main point -- the secondary has not lived up to its hype and must do better. -
The secondary is a mystery. Seem to play well off the receivers. Almost like they are over thinking the position and not just going in and playing. Don't understand those missed coverages...perhaps no communication.
seem like physically up to the job (Ol Miss receiving corps was really good).
Just not sure. Not really sure the coaches aren't just as frustrated.Comment

I'm not trying to defend the secondary as they have played badly in my opinion, for the most part, this season. As they say, though, it all begins up front, both offensively and defensively. The coaching staff needs to figure out some way to get more pressure on the QB. Give the QB enough time to throw, and competent receivers, and most of the time he'll complete a high percentage of his passes.Philippians 4:11-4:13👍 1Comment

Baity has gotten burned a few times but on the whole, has played rather well. It seems West gets caught out of position quite a bit. Lonnie Johnson is tough and hits hard but has also let dudes run right by him.
It seems like the whole secondary takes turns making costly mistakes.Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that... They don't turn their heads and look for the ball. This has been a problem for years now. Seemed we never had that problem when Brooks was here. Stoops came here after running a very successful defense at Florida State. We have yet to be successful.Isaiah 5:20Comment

I really think Matt's comment hit the nail. If you give quarterbacks time, they are going to be more efficient.
I don't remember UK ever being highly successful with a 3-4 base. Multiple or not. Maybe I am off base on that. I know we had Archer a couple of times as DC and he had great success with that at other places.
little late in the game to think about changing, but does anyone else remember a successful 3-4 at Kentucky?

YES.....our recruiting and quality of athlete is highest in decades. We are up to about number 8 or number ten in our league.
Thats part of the SEC double edged sword. You can be in the top thirty of the NATION in recruiting and STILL be on the lower end of the conference.
Then again, if we aren't in that conference, we likely don't get those players.👍 1Comment

True, but I have seen better DB play in teams not as talented as we are. Sure the athletes would help but the fundamentals are terrible.Isaiah 5:20Comment

When Dawson was let go after the 2015 season, Stoops definitely upgraded when he brought in Gran as OC. I was hoping the defense would improve this season with the change in DC. Obviously the D hasn’t improved, certainly not in the secondary. When this season is over, Stoops needs to think long and hard about the defensive staff, schemes, etc, because what’s being done isn’t working.👍 1Comment
