That would matter if the ball were out. Here he has control of the ball. He maintained control beyond this point until after the left elbow hit the ground at which point the play is dead.

I have not seen video replay so I have no dog in this fight. It was ruled a fumble on the field and there is nothing in this one still that indicates "down" or "incontrovertible evidence of possession". YMMV

I agree, Will. I don't think John is helping his case any. It appears, to me, that he has one end of the ball in his hand, while the other end is pinned against his arm.

The pinky and ring finger are not attached to the ball in the close up pic. It's so weird that everybody here is like, "yeah, the replay official got it right and the guys on the field messed up," while on the rest of my internets it's consensus that the opposite is true.
