    Rioting at St. Matthews Mall?

Such a weird part of town for this to happen. 1,000 to 2,000 teenagers?

I wonder how many parents disciplined their children for being involved, or even tried to find out if their's was there.

Good question, Lighthouse. When I think about how some parents are raising their children, it makes me cringe when I think about the future of this country.

That had to be the "plan". No way that many teens are there and it "just so happens". Of course this is my opinion on the matter.

Just another reason why I avoid malls like the plague. Two thousand kids though? Sounds like a planned riot to me.

I love malls for some reason. They're nostalgia museums, especially the one in Somerset where I hung out as a kid. I like just going in there and walking around. Same reason I like video stores, record shops, bookstores. The smell of Bookland in Somerset Mall is immediately recognizable to me.

Re: this "riot"...it's one reason I'm not going to let my kids on Facebook or Instagram or any social media. My wife says to just moderate it; I say don't even let them on it. Nothing good comes from it. This American Life did a show recently on how teenage girls use Instagram and it was frigging ridiculous on every imaginable level.

This is the first thought I had.

My wife grew up over close to Jefferson Mall. I won't go in there unless somebody absolutely makes me. I once saw a woman throw her shoe at another woman in there from a distance of about 50 feet. At Christmas. When the place was packed.

It's like the fifth circle of hell.

Now Oxmoor...Oxmoor's different. I could live there.

There's a movie theater there as well. 2,000 kids isn't unreasonable. Likely some sort of fight or altercation broke out in an area and the flames were fanned via social media. More kids running to it and from it than actually involved in it.

Kentucky Kingdom serves as a "babysitter" of sorts in the summer. Not unusual for parents to drop off 12 - 14 year olds for the day unsupervised.

Some in the media today are saying that this event was overblown by Mall St. Matthews security and there weren't even close to 1,000 kids involved.

Sort of a weird situation. I'd say surveyor's right that a lot of kids were in the mall/at the theater, heard that something was going down on FB or wherever, and just gravitated toward it. I'd probably go check it out too if I got a text that read, "Something's happening."

I agree that the 1,000 - 2,000 figure is overblown. Such a spread simply means the police have no idea how many were involved. The Mall has 4,600 parking spaces. Assuming the spaces were at 2/3rds capacity and 1.5 per car average, there were likely in excess of 4,500 patrons at the mall. 2,000 additional kids would be a high number.

I talked to an authority who was there for over 3 hours, and he said they brought in 5 Tarc buses to take a bunch of the kids home. It really doesn't matter how many, the thing I'm concerned about is, kids shut down a public Mall running through it and making a lot of people afraid.

This story came across World News Tonight's Twitter feed yesterday evening, so I assume that somebody at ABC vetted it and decided that something happened.

Will be nice to see what really happened. To me, it doesn't matter if it was 100 or 1000 kids. I would have been afraid and left immediately unless in a restaurant. Other than Cheese Cake Factory and the Mexican restaurant, don't think they have any other "sit down" restaurants. Sure makes it interesting to see how security will handled in the future.
