Had to put my cat down today

The time with our pets go fast but I wouldn't trade the memories for anything. Funny thing is I never liked cats. I hated them. Then I met my Wife and she had 4 outside cats but they lived with her Mom. I slowly warmed up to the cat thing. I just love their demeanor. If they want you they let you know but they can drop you like a bad habit. I dug it. So we got our big boy from her brother who had this stray hanging around his property. She had a litter in the bed of his truck so we went out to get one. We obviously fell in love with this one particular domestic short hair who just seemed to have this attitude different from all the rest. Different as in, "Don't mess with me.". So we take him home almost exactly 6 months before our wedding day. It took a while to gert him in line. We had to declaw the front and neuter. After that he was our buddy. I've been a mess today. He had 15 great years with us but had been going downhill in the last few months. I'm a 3rd shifter and he always met me at the door when I came home, wanting to be fed and loved on. It's gonna take a LONG time to get over knowing when I come home that he won't be there. We miss you lots already Pepe!

I am very sorry for your loss. Pets are great friends. They are always there for you no matter what happens. If you had a bad day they are there to help you feel better and usually do. We had a cat from the time me wife and I were married until he died on Halloween of 2010. He was like our child. It was very hard to see him die. He died from complications of diabetes. He had a good long life of 18 1/2 years. I had the nearly the same depth of feelings when he died as when by dad died a few years before that. We said after he died it would be a while before we got another cat. Well it was about 8 months later my wife saw this cat on the animal shelter van that was at a local pet store. She told me about it and I looked it up on their website. I think we both felt we needed another pet and we decided go out and take a look at her. We fell in love with her and that was all she wrote. This cat is full bred Bengal Cat and its about the best cat I have ever had. Almost dog like. She meets me a the door, flops over and wants her belly rubbed. Always in your lap and maybe a little mouthy but that's fine with us. So even though you have lost a pet you should consider another one sometime soon. They really help you in so many ways.

Reading your all's posts has me all choked up. My wife and I are big time animal lovers. We've had dozens of cats during the 34+ years we've been married. Even though you love them all, I think there's always once that stands out above the rest. For me it was Chloe. She's been gone three years this month, and I'm still not over it. We have two at the present time. We had four up until about three months ago when one of our neighbor's dogs killed two of them. One of them we had had for over 15 years. If you approach being a pet owner with the right mentality, it brings lots of great memories and lots of heartbreak as well. You have my deepest sympathy BH.

Thanks Kevin. I'm sure we will get another. When our dog died in 2010, I swore we wouldn't get another one. Well we've had a Bichon since last August. She wasn't quite the buddy to Pepe as our previous dog was but they got along alright. I don't know what it is but I just get mega attached to animals.Plus I just can't imagine our home without a pet/pets.

Matt, we treat our pets like they are part of the family, because they are. I'm not gonna say I love them more than my human family, but I tell you what, it's pretty damn close. It's probably even right there. I just love animals. All the pets I had growing up, it killed me when they died, but nothing like today with Pepe and 5 years ago with our dog Tazz. They were best buddies and now the connection is gone which is even more heartbreaking.

My hearts with you. I had to put down my Rotty back in April. One of the hardest things I have ever done.

So sorry about your cat. We put down an almost 19 year old last spring that we had gotten from a rescue when she was hardly weaned. I looked over where her bed was for a long time. They are family

Blue Heaven, so sorry to about your news, but I'm glad you shared it. So many of us have been through that and will again, because pets will always be a part of our lives. I know what you mean about expecting them there, that's when it really hits. Or even when you least expect it. We have three cats right now, one is 18, the other I took in for someone for a few years until they can take them back, only I'm not sure I'll be able to.

Matt, I didn't realize that the dogs had killed two of your cats. Last I heard, it was just a potential danger. Man, I'm sorry to hear that.

I quit posting in that thread because it became too difficult. He finally got rid of one of the dogs, after it was too late, and has the other one penned up.

Sorry it came to that before he'd do anything about his dogs.

Thanks, I'd say he was getting some heat. Although the evidence is circumstantial, some others and I am sure the dogs killed at least four other cats besides ours. Plus the dogs were all over the neighborhood crapping in people's yards.

That must be hard w. no iron clad evidence. And now the dog is penned? Do they walk it? Give any attention? What kind of dog is it?

I doubt if they walk it. Attention? I have no idea. It's a Husky.
