A couple new ones that Mrs. Catatonic and I have seen recently:

Lady Bird - Well-crafted and entertaining coming-of-age story that covers a lot of familiar territory. I liked this a lot, but I might have loved it with more of the go-for-broke brutal realism only hinted at in the first few minutes. The dialogue was exceptional throughout, though. I expect (more) great things from Greta Gerwig in the future.

Star Wars Episode Whatever The Last Jedi - The scenes with Luke Skywalker and Rey were fantastic. When neither of them was on screen the movie went into a complete tailspin, like it was trying to fill time until coming back to those two. Stuff happening so stuff gets blown up. Stuff happening so someone can narrowly but assuredly escape certain death. This isn't the worst Star Wars movie by a longshot, but it's the one that has convinced me I'm over Star Wars.

Netflix's "The End Of The ****************ing World" is a minor masterpiece. Highly recommended, and it's easy to binge - eight twenty minute episodes, or roughly the length of a typical movie.

Last night I saw Dave Chappelle's stand-up "Equanimity". In my opinion this is the best of his recent Netflix specials. Introspective and insightful yet unapologetically juvenile as ever. There were a few moments in this that made me laugh so hard it hurt. At one point in the show Chappelle implies he may be about to go back into hiding for another decade. I really hope that's not the case.

His Chapelle Show may have been the funniest thing to ever be on television. Sadly, we won't be seeing humor like that anymore because, you know, it's "offensive".

This is not true at all. There are plenty of comedies on television right now that are just as offensive (or worse) than "Chappelle's Show." (R.I.P.)

Chappelle Show was brilliant at times. A big chunk of his new special addresses political correctness. It's good, interesting stuff.

If you cut the filler sketches, the musical acts, and some of the momentum-killing introductions, and just put together a "Best Of" Chappelle Show special, you'd have one of the greatest comedies of all time.

The new Chappelle specials are pretty good - sometimes hilarious - but his bits have become a little too self-referential. He spends most of his time joking about being Dave Chappelle.

I have noticed this. I don't see it as a negative, but I agree with the observation.

Wife and I finally saw The Last Jedi. Getting a lot of knocks but we both loved it. It's dark but keeps the hope theme going. Not as good as Rogue One (imo, the best Star Wars flick) but better than Force Awakens.

                      Waiting on Hostiles to open.

                        The Shape of Water.

The first movement of this is great. Loved the lilting, French-inspired score. Loved the details in the scenes: the old theater, an artist's technicolor advertisements, the colors inside a diner. You feel like you're in a fairy tale set in the 1950s. Then the plot kicks in and this movie gets tedious. I agree with KC's point above about the film being "cold"--there's something so precious about the way del Toro crafts this movie that makes it feel more like a storybook than a movie. It's one of those films that's awesome to look at but doesn't quite come to life like it should. The villain is silly--some of his dialogue is laugh-out-loud bad--and the suspense sequences are so clunky and clichéd that you sit there willing them to be over. This is one of those movies where everything works technically; the actors are unbelievable, some of the scenes are achingly beautiful, the music is perfect. But it is not an enjoyable movie for some reason.

Recommended only because it's a technical marvel, but wait until it's streaming and you can get it for free.

Finally caught the first episode of Errol Morris's Wormwood on Netflix last night.

                          Highly interesting--and unsettling--show.

If you like conspiracy theory stuff, particularly the off-the-charts craziness of MKUltra, then you might like this. It's like Morris's The Thin Blue Line on a heavy dose of psychedelic drugs.

I feel like this is true of all that guy's movies, save for a few that weren't even visually interesting.

Get Out with a Best Picture nomination. Hell yes.

Also: Boss Baby got some love, because of course it did.

Get Out was fantastic. Worth owning.

My wife, squinting at the TV the whole time we were watching it: "This is weird."
