Also of note is the new Netflix true crime series The Confession Tapes.

This is highly interesting if you enjoy (is that the right word?) shows like Forensic Files and Dateline. I watched the first couple of episodes last night and they blew me away.

      Lion.

This Academy Award nominee is now on Netflix. We've probably discussed this movie somewhere in this thread, but it's an amazing story of a boy who gets lost from his family in India and is adopted by an Australian family (Nicole Kidman with red hair and looking like a sixty-year-old hello!). Later in life he decides to search for his biological family using the new technology of Google Earth. It gets a little too fuzzy in the middle, but if you're looking for a heartwarmer that the whole family can watch this is a good pick. Reminded me a little of The Impossible which was discussed above.

      Highly recommended family film.

        Stronger.

Jake Gyllenhaal, who's becoming one of America's most diverse actors, plays Jeff Bauman, who had his legs blown off in the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. The film is interesting because the first half presents a cynical character who scoffs at how he's being portrayed as a hero for "just standing there," as Bauman points out. They trot him out to sporting events, Oprah gets interested, but Bauman basically wants to stay home and drink with his alcoholic mother. But as the movie goes on Gyllenhaal's character, who has been raised by a brawling, cursing, working-class family of Bostonians, learns why people see him as a hero. It's at that point that Stronger becomes kind of a profound film, and the last 15 minutes speaks to the nature of tragedy and what it means to live through one. The scene with the famous "cowboy hat man" late in the movie is about as emotional as it gets at the cinema.

Highly recommended and Gyllenhaal's performance should earn him an Oscar nomination.

Stronger was a little gem of a movie, Will. Liked it a lot.

mother! ... I've never had such an extreme reaction to a film in my life. What you've heard is probably true, and as the father of a six month old, this movie affected me in ways I cannot begin to describe. Darren Aronofsky films are decidedly not for everyone, and he throws the kitchen sink into this Biblical allegory about Mother Earth and creation. The performances are good, the movie is beautiful to look at, and for the first hour and fifteen minutes it works as a wonky home invasion thriller... and then something happens and it goes entirely off the rails. The last thirty minutes of this movie are baffling, disgusting, unbelievable, and inexplicable, in equal measure. There were three walk outs in my screening, and I actually had to watch the last scenes from the side ramp. Can't spoil anything here, but if you go into this movie, understand that what you think you're getting... you're not. I walked out of this stunned and disgusted, ready to rant about how much I hated it, but I can't stop thinking about it over the past couple of days. If the purpose of art is to make you feel something, then this movie certainly succeeded. I cannot recommend it to anybody, but if you're in the mood for a punk rock, challenging movie, approach with extreme caution.

Also saw IT again, and despite its flaws, loved it even more the second time.

Saw Blade Runner 2049. It was too long by an hour, but it was also proof positive that Denis Villeneuve might be the best director working in Hollywood today. Visually stunning and an assured piece of art.

How does it compare to the original? I'm scared to go.

As for the SW trailer. I have come close to losing all interest in this formerly beloved franchise.

Faithful to the original almost to a fault.

You just don't know how fired up I am to see this movie. If it's as good as The Force Awakens then I would be very satisfied.

The David Fincher series Mindhunter on Netflix is pretty amazing so far.

Four episodes in and it's highly interesting. Looks at the beginnings of the Behavioral Sciences Unit at the FBI and how they coined the term "serial killer."

American Made- Fantastic movie. Tom Cruise is one of the best actors of my generation and this is one of his best movies. Based on a true story, he plays Barry Seal. A TWA pilot who goes from small time cuban cigar smuggler to working for the CIA and running coke for Pablo Escobar. I loved this movie. It harnesses the 70's/80's feel expertly. If you had your head in the sand and thought our government wasn't shady then this movie will change that thinking.

A LOT of movies that are very good are movies I was totally unaware of...........for instance, "Hidden Figures".

Excellent film that tells the true story of African American "computers" - women involved in providing and checking complex calculations at NASA during the space race of the 60s. Johnson was instrumental in providing/proofing calculations involving spacecraft re-entry trajectories.

The lead character is Katherine Goble Johnson. She grew up in Virginia, was an extremely bright child who graduated high school at 14 and college at 18 and became one of the significant contributors to the space program. A number of other black women's stories are told as well regarding their contributions.
Jim Parsons and Kirsten Dunst roles are fictional characters representing a composite of the mindset and negative attitudes the women faced at the time. There's a few liberties taken with regard to factual portions of the story, but overall provides an accurate portrayal.

Kevin Costner essentially provides the same (playing himself) performance as NASA Director at Langley, Virginia. His character was also a composite of 3 Directors at Langley during the course of Johnson's employment.

The movie does quite well of portraying not only the societal pressure these women were under to prove themselves in a white world, but also the pressure NASA was under from the Kennedy administration as the Soviets were handing us our asses in the space race in the late 50s and early 60s.
Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

                                This is must-watch television.

Similar to True Detective but in many ways this is a superior show. Best thing Netflix has ever done IMO.
