Interesting comment about Elway. I'll always have a negative feeling about him. I no longer keep up with the NFL. If I did I'd still be a Colts fan. I still remember, when he was drafted by the Colts, him saying, in effect, I'm too good to play for a bunch of losers. He went on to say I'm a good enough baseball player to play professional baseball. He concluded by saying if the Colts don't trade me, I'll just play MLB.

Now every time an athlete gets caught he says something to the effect of "yeah I sprained my ankle last year and took andro to get over it quicker. I shouldn't have and I'm sorry." When in fact he's been juicing every day since he was 13 and decided to go all in on making it as an athlete.
I'm 5' 9" 175 but pretty coordinated. Who knows what I could have been if I started a steady diet of steroids when I was 13?
Now medically whether they're as bad as some say or not is debatable. There are certain side effects that will happen to virtually everyone who uses them for very long--such as the tendon/ligamament damage due to the support system not developing in line with the muscles. But other possibilities are just increased risks--such as liver cancer like a couple guys I know died from.
Now in football its so widespread that punishing for it seems a little silly. The chemists just try to stay ahead of the labs in detecting different compounds.Comment

As I understand it, there are steroids to get you jacked and there are supplements to help you to heal and recover. I don't agree with those that make you huge.
When the McQwire/ Sosa/Bonds blasts were happening, outside of Bonds those guys were already big and strong. Barry Bonds was the best hitter in baseball when he was a youngster with tge Pirates. Roids didn't cause him to hit 74. Years and years of honing his craft did. The same goes for Mark and Sammy. Barry Bonds is the best player in my lifetime and it isn't even close.Isaiah 5:20Comment

Bonds looked like Ving Rhames taking batting practice with his shirt off. By the time he was hitting 70 - 80 HR/yr many of them looked like pop-ups to the shortstop but they landed 10 rows deep due massive strength. Yes he had excellent eye-hand coordination. No one has every argued anabolic steroids improve that. But when every ball he hit traveled an extra X mph and X percent farther about 300 of his HR should have been popouts if not for artificially gained muscle mass. The numbers are a guess but my point is not.
If PEDs did not enhance performance the athletes would not use them. They don't cheat just for the asterisk by their name.Comment

Bonds is the epitome of the roided-up superfreak. They absolutely helped him hit 74 home runs.
Great hitter but not an otherworldly power hitter until roids.Comment

I read this to say you believe athletes only take steroids to help recovery. Surely that's not what you mean? They obviously increase muscle mass and strength and that is why athletes take them.

PEDs primarily aid in keeping protein synthesis going all the time so, more muscle for sure, bigger, faster, stronger, but also better tissue repair in general.
As “Juicing since you were 13†it would have hurt your development as peuberty alone makes one about as anabolic as you need to be until your 19 or 20. Once you stop growing and your hormones settle down, then carefully administered pharmaceuticals can help one maximize there genetic potential. If they work unbelievablely hard.

Studied a fair amount of pharmacology as well as biochemistry and have a pretty good understanding of what testosterone does in the body. I'm also pretty convinced that the fellas built like He-man are jacking their levels well above what they would have naturally. And more to the point of this argument is the indisputable fact that the athletes do it (against the rules) because it is boosting their abilities.
The East German women's swim team are not the only ones who have figured out it helps immensely.
But I don't mean to be combative. I truly believe its naive to think the Lyle Alzados and Barry Bonds of the sportsworld are trying to maintain their 20 year old levels of testosterone to maintain their youthful exuberance. They get jacked to unnatural levels to hit real hard and make a lot of money. And no--they don't do it once to get over an injury and put on 50 pounds of muscle as they would have us believe with each failed test.
Finally I also do not believe a guy with 10 times the natural level of testosterone coursing through his body has to work nearly as hard to get huge as someone who does it the natural way. I have been around plenty of guys who've taken that shortcut.
Perhaps if there were a way to only allow very low (therapeutic) levels of it (or something that stimulates the body's own production of it) the sports world might allow it. But if they cannot police the major abuse of it they sure as heck can't say "OK you can use it...but not very much."Last edited by Catsrock; 01-20-2018, 11:15 PM.Comment

Played every infield position except P, 1B and 2B. 8 time All-Star, 2x Silver Slugger award............
He's comparable to a lot of great players currently in the HoF.Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.
