This is an awful take in so many ways. People with depression don't "choose" to have depression, like they would choose to take that first drink. They might try to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol to help with the symptoms of depression, but depression is an actual chemical imbalance in the human brain. It makes everything black, consumes the brain with anxiety and doubt, makes you think thoughts that you don't want to think. You know they're irrational, but they're there all the same. The thoughts and feelings are terrifying. You feel alone. You feel empty. You feel like there is no escape from the hole you're in. And the scariest thing is, it doesn't make any sense. Take it from me. I've dealt with it first hand, and it's the most horrific thing I've ever done. And I have a LOT to live for, don't use drugs or alcohol, and live a drama-free life.
To marginalize depression as a fake illness is foolish, dangerous, and ignorant. You can't just pray it away.
