It's not exactly the same, but there's sufficient similarity that it's clear Frey-Henley borrowed significantly from the old Eugene Williams tune from the early 70s.
Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

Merel was and is the best country singing songwriter.

Of Merle's 38 No. 1 hit singles, 22 he wrote. Then there's a bushel of songs he wrote that were in the top ten that never reached no. 1, but should have. "Today I Started Loving You, Again" was not a hit for Haggard - didn't even chart.

Seashores of Old Mexico - Merle Haggard

A Haggard written hit that didn't crack the Billboard Hot Country in `74, reaching No. 11.

That's an amazing accomplishment. I had no idea. Surveyor, if there is one traditional country music artist that you would choose to be the face of this genre, who would it be?

If not Merle, then Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash? All were great songwriters. Parton and Cash may have had more hits singing their own songs. Nelson wrote a lot of songs that were hits for other artists.

Merle I think was by far more prolific as a writer who sang his own songs. I remember seeing somewhere (Ralph Emery interview, perhaps) that Haggard wrote in the neighborhood of 250 or so songs.

Haggard had a No. 1 hit with "Kentucky Gambler", written by Dolly Parton.

It also depends upon the era. Haggard was heavily influenced by Bob Wills and Lefty Frizzel in the early 60s..

                    Honorable mention - George Jones.
