    Football Question # 2.

B1 intercepts a pass and begins to advance. B1 is pursued by A2 who cannot see B3 approach. B3 contacts A2 with his shoulder below the neck and shoulders, above the waist, in the side.

    A. No problem.
    B. B3 should be flagged for targeting.
    C. B3 should be flagged for a blindside block.

    I'll take A.

It should be A, but I bet the answer is C. I'll go with that one.

I think my answer was based on "what should be" vs what the rule actually is.

I think it would only be illegal if the hit were from behind--same as in a kick return (block in the back). Don't think it's B3's fault if A2 doesn't see him coming from the side. He shouldn't be considered a defenseless player.

This would be my answer also.

The correct answer to football question # 2,

is A for NCAA, and C for HS.

RULE 9; Conduct of Players and Others Subject to the Rules.

                  SECTION 1. Personal Fouls.
Targeting and Making Forcible Contact With the Crown of the Helmet ARTICLE 3.
No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown of his helmet. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul.
Targeting and Making Forcible Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player
                  ARTICLE 4.
No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent (See Note 2 below) with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul Note 1: “Targeting” means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to:
                  • Launch—a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area
                  • A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground
                  • Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area • Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet
Note 2: Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14). Examples of defenseless players include but are not limited to:
                  • A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass.
                  • A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
                  • A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return.
                  • A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier..
                  • A player on the ground.
                  • A player obviously out of the play.
                  • A player who receives a blind-side block.
                  • A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped.
                  • A quarterback any time after a change of possession

I POSTED THE ENTIRE RULE ON TARGETING SO YOU WOULD GET A CLEAR PICTURE OF WHAT THE OFFICIALS ARE LOOKING FOR. YOU CAN SEE IT'S NOT A SIMPLE CALL. ALSO, NOTHING IN THE RULE IS PRESENT IN THE QUESTION, SO IT WOULD BE A NO CALL.

I hate defenseless receiver calls... If he is out in the pattern, there is no such thing.

they are taking the hitting out of football. saw the Purdue player get ejected for a good hit. if you don't want the QBs to get hit, put them in pink and play 2 hand touch with them.

OK, I didn't like the call but by rule it was targeting.
