Hamilton, Hammond and Haendiges Hand Kentucky 2-0 Start

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Led by Karissa Hamilton’s grand slam, Abby Hammond’s sixth-inning go-ahead home run, and a complete-game performance in the circle by Sarah Haendiges, the Kentucky Softball team won both games of a season-opening day doubleheader in day one of the SDSU Season Kick-Off.

Kentucky raced out to a 7-0 lead against Miami (OH) in game one of the day before the RedHawks scored six unanswered to cut the lead to one as Carson Fall then re-entered the game to close out an 8-7 wild win. In the second game of the day for Kentucky, the Wildcats came from behind in the bottom of the sixth inning, using a two-run home run from freshman Abby Hammond to take a 3-3 game and push UK into a 5-3 lead, which it would hold onto and close out the perfect day in San Diego.

For the second-straight season, UK is now 2-0. The Wildcats will play two games Saturday in day two of the SDSU Season Kick-Off, with Kentucky facing Loyola-Chicago again at 7:30 p.m. ET to start its day before closing out against the host San Diego State Aztecs at 10 p.m. ET with the game airing live on the Mountain West Digital Network from the SDSU Softball Stadium.
