WESTFIELD, Ind. - Camden, N.J., standout DJ Wagner has been the talk of the Bluegrass State in recent weeks.
The No. 1 high school basketball player in the Class of 2023 is in a unique position in the recruiting landscape. His father, Dajuan, played for John Calipari at Memphis and the father said the Kentucky coach is "like family," noting his son has been to Calipari's camps since he was very young.
The Wildcats had always been perceived as a lock for Wagner until March 18 when Kenny Payne was hired at Louisville.
Payne was not only a longtime assistant to Calipari at Kentucky, but he played at Louisville with DJ Wagner's grandfather, Milt. The elder Wagner and Payne remain close friends and it has been speculated that Milt Wagner could end up on Payne's staff in some capacity at U of L. Dajuan Wagner said about Payne: "Kenny my uncle."
In recent days, Wagner has received four Crystal Ball projections to Louisville.
