Gah. I knew that.
McCreary. Traditionally the second (or third) poorest county in Kentucky and one of the poorest in the US.
A lot of times it goes Owsley, McCreary, Clay. Sometimes it's Owsley, Clay, McCreary.
I used to hate my hometown but have grown a weird appreciation for it. Wouldn't want to live there but I like visiting. Now that my parents are both dead I don't get down as much as I did, but it's still home.
We are a churchy bunch, though. Churches errywhere.Comment

I got a friend from middlesboro, beautiful area. Kingdom Come state park is on my to-visit list.Comment

You guys had it made. I grew up it the sticks of Hopkins County. Towns closest were Ashbyburg, Jewel City and Onton. I lived so far back, we had to go toward town to hunt.John 3:3

I know the name and we seem to have a ton of mutual acquaintances. He may have even lived in my neighborhood at one point, if it's who I'm thinking of. Believe he's a few years younger than me, though, so I can't say I know him, know him.Comment

He’s a known legend here and many swear he would have gladly come home to coach Washington Co. but the school district never even bothered to offer 😡
His nephew is my son’s HS baseball coach.Last edited by Catsrock; 11-20-2021, 01:25 PM.👍 1Comment

Haha! But the hunting is good in Hopkins. Wish I had a couple hundred acres prime deer and turkey land there. One of the top turkey producing counties in the state

Yeah I don’t know him well, but I talked to him every so often. He seems to know most of middlesboro though.Comment

My brother has a big farm outside of Hanson. If you're interested, let me know and I'll see what I can do.John 3:3

What's ironic Steve is that when you were growing up, my hometown was probably not a terrible place to live. Incredibly rural of course but at one point the town of Stearns had two movie theaters.
Then: coal bust. Since probably the mid 1970s the place has been a wasteland, and I mean that literally. My brother-in-law is a country boy from Bardstown. I took him down to my hometown a couple years ago and he was horrified.
It's almost surreal.👍 1Comment

Oh wow! It’s deer season now and I’d have to plan ahead to drive that distance. But come spring turkey season I may have to check with you. Appreciate the offer greatly! Are you sure he doesn’t have someone on a hunting lease already? There’s pretty decent money in hunting leases for farmers who don’t hunt these days.
