Cats' SEC Tournament Run Ends with Loss to Tennessee

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Kentucky women’s basketball team saw its winning streak in the Southeastern Conference Tournament come to an end on Friday. But the Cats didn’t go down without a fight.

Kentucky, the 14th seed in the event, gave third-seeded Tennessee all it could handle before falling to the Lady Vols 80-71 in Friday’s contest.

Robyn Benton led Kentucky (12-19) with 20 points while Maddie Scherr had 13 points, five assists, four steals, three blocked shots and two rebounds. Jada Walker added 12 points for UK, while Ajae Petty added 11.

The clock struck midnight for Cinderella, but the girls didn't go quietly. They fought to the end in a game that was closer than the final score indicates before falling to a team with superior size. For the life of me, I can't understand why they play so well in the tourney and so badly in the regular season. Perhaps they're trying to make a statement.

I agree Matt. Our Ladies took 71 shots but could only manage to hit 27 for 38%, and were out rebounded 43-24. Size does matter.

I agree. Some of the fans, on Twitter, are using the same rhetoric for keeping her that they use for keeping Cal when the mens' team is floundering, she's a good ambassador for UK. That's great except that's not her primary function.

Any time there are symptoms of issues within any program, there probably is something internally going on. And we have had symptoms for a couple seasons in the women's and men's programs.

I really do believe the team has used the last two SEC tourneys to send the message 'look we can play when we want to'.

It sure seems that way. Of course like we see with Men's Basketball, and a couple years ago with the Baseball program, Mitch is slow to act.

He has gotten himself in a real bind with Cal's lifetime contract. If not for that, I believe he may have sent Cal packing. Mitch is a bean counter, so I don't think he's unduly concerned with the performances of the sports that don't produce a lot of revenue.
