I don't buy it when other coaches say their system won't work with the one and dones. Not one of the top coaches is turning down players because they are so good that they may only play one year in college. Has anyone been critical of kcrseshcxosdveski (the duke coach) or Self with their one-and-dones? They've not had as many as Cal, but they've had them. EVERY coach is doing the same thing, which is trying their best to get the most talent as possible at their school. Cal is just better at it than anyone else.

        Good post.

But what I think Pitino has said is that he just couldn't do it like Cal. Not that he wouldn't recruit one-and-dones--he's tried to do that--but that he couldn't build his program around them.

Of course UofL fans publicly love it that they haven't had a one-and-done. L1C4 and all that. But privately, you know it burns them. Especially when they think about Pitino's record against Cal head-to-head.

Cal has absolutely dominated Pitino while at Kentucky and to be honest, that blows my mind. You would think that with Rick's hectic style of play that he would of stole a win or two at this point.

I disagree. Many "systems", and that goes for UofL, spend more time on learning the system than developing players. Even great players look confused playing early for UofL because of all the thinking that is involved. Cal solved that in two ways. First, he has drills that help develop the players but also help the player learn what they need to do. So they work on these drills, then he turns around and says, "see this, this situation is why you have been working on this particular drill". I've heard him say it many times. Next, he keeps the game very simple. If this guy goes here, you go here. If a guy is playing that guy over the top, do this. The players don't have to think that much so players can succeed at a high level earlier.

At the very basic level, why would a true one and done want to to to UofL and spend all that time learning a zone that they can't use after they leave? I have nothing against the zone UofL plays. It is very effective. It is designed to help UofL win games. But it is not something you are going to butter your bread with if you are playing the, "develop players for the next level" game that Cal plays. Players learn a little zone; just enough to be able to understand the limited zone principles that are allowed in the NBA.

Coach K has changed his game to a more professional model since he started working with the Pros for International play. There is room for both philosophies. UofL is arguably a top five team so both models can produce top college teams.

In regard to Cal and Pitino, how many pro's from Louisville have NBA contracts like Wall,Davis,Cousins, or even Bledsoe? How many UL guys are NBA Superstars? Has keeping a player in college 4 years to develop really paid off for Pitino recruits? One of Rick's biggest downfalls in the NBA is that players didn't want to play for him over a 82 game stretch with him running his boot camp style of play. After Rick was let go in Boston, the NBA defensive rules actually changed which may have benefited him and his success rate but at the same time, players just weren't buying into the everyday 48 minutes of hell so to speak. Cal without a doubt blows Rick away in recruiting but as others have mentioned, Cal may actually be better at getting players ready for the pro's in a shorter time than Rick can in 4 years.................
