I generally think the "it will all come down to the refs" crowd is paranoid, but Roger Ayers concerns me.
IIRC we lost the two games he did last year, and Cal has a poor record since he's been here in games Ayers does. BUT I believe he has a penchant for calling a lot of fouls, so that may be an advantage for UK.John 3:3

Roger Ayers obviously has a boner for Cal. Numbers don't lie. Cal is lucky to win half the games in which Ayers is an official. That simple stat goes against all odds for a coach that wins over 80% of his games when Ayers is not around. Ayers will put on his bullying act today and it will be directed at Cal, not Rick. It's seems odd to me that the ranks of officials contains just maybe a half dozen total fools and we always manage to get at least one of them in the big games. Why not get it out in the open and assign T.V. Teddy Valentine, Roger Ayers and Doug Shows to this game? Right there is an all-star officials team if I've ever seen one. Better to go to the zoo and raid the monkey house for three officials. Just MHO.

That 1-3-1 half court trap we saw a couple weeks ago still haunts me. We looked awfully tentative about it.
THIS is the game of the year for TV and the NCAA. I predict that UL will get many fouls, and that we will too, in the great "balancing" acts that ALWAYS seem to color high profile games.
I fear the pace will be slow, not fast, IMO. Because of their fouls on us, we have to score at the line.
I THINK (certainly don't know) the key to this game will be Andrew Harrison and Trey Lyles. Lousiville will box us out and get over the back fouls on our bigs, and they will glue themselves to Booker and Aa Harrison. So it will be Andrew's penetration and then Trey Lyles mid range game that will be the X-factors.
There, now.. I've made my self feel better.
UK 64
UL 57
Still think a LOT of whistles.

First, Shows doesn't work in the ACC, so couldn't be on this game. I'm not a particular fan of Roger Ayers, but Cal has a part in this issue too. Personally, I love Coach Cal, but if I was on this game and he stayed out on the court and out of the Coaches box, and said some of the things he says, I'd wack him too. Fans of any team have a few Officials they don't like and that's because they are assigned all their Big games. But remember the coaches have to approve the officials, and if Cal approved this crew, that says something about them.John 3:3

It isn't the technicals with Ayers for me as much as it is the fouls.
On another board Jon Scott pointed out that before Cal, Ayers had called 16 fouls a game against Kentucky. That's three fewer than the average of 19. Since Cal came, Ayers has called 24 fouls per game on Kentucky.
I hope we're just dealing with a small sample size there. Really I wouldn't know Roger Ayers from Bill Ayers had it not been for the UNC game last year. The grudge fans have against individual refs has always been odd to me.
But that UNC game was so bad, and Ayers was so awful in particular, that I remember his name. I also remember Karl Hess from the Marquette nightmare, particularly the Antwain Barbour charge, but Hess is apparently hated by all fanbases.
I still think that a lot of fouls hurt Louisville. They can't shoot free throws well--although they've been trending upward the last couple of games--and they don't have the depth Kentucky does. I maintain that they'll have three or four players in this game who will put up almost nothing statistically but will just be out there. If they get in foul trouble and have to rely on those players, they can't beat UK.Comment

Hess has had problems with UK that go all the way back to Pitino. He did a game against UNC that was just awful one year. It got to a point were I really did think he had a grudge against UK. He hadn't done many of their games in recent years. I had hoped Cal had black balled him from doing UK games.
Refs are human and can and do hold grudges against certain coaches or teams. I hope none of these three do today against either team.Kentucky fan since 1971.Comment

My big thing with Karl Hess is, he should have retired 2-3 years ago because he has trouble getting up and down the court. Another example of the 3 man crew allowing an old official to stay around longer. If I had that opportunity, I probably would have done the same.John 3:3
