Has Alex played his last game?

Matt Jones seems to be pretty pessimistic about Alex's return. He does tend to exaggerate the severity of situations both good and bad from time to time but does seem to know what he's talking about in this matter.

He says most people he has talked to say it could go either way. He says most say that they hope Alex can be back by the SEC tourney. Matt said he may not return at all....

Cal obviously said Alex would be out a couple weeks 4 days ago. So that would put him out till Feb 23rd.....so who knows.

I'm praying Alex can be back ready to go on Cal's timeline....but listening to MJ makes me worry....

Man, I would hate that for him. I've not been as frustrated with Alex like so many have, simply because I personally didn't put certain expectations on him and kind of just accepted him for the kind of player he was. Of course, the flip side is that Coach Cal has repeatedly made media comments about playing consistently at that "beast" level. And coach would know if the guy has the potential to do it all the time.

Nevertheless, I can't imagine we're going to be a better team in the long run without Alex playing. So, I hope it's not as dramatic as his career being done and he can be back in a couple weeks.

I posed the same question, in another thread, a few days ago. This was before they came out with the 10-14 day revelation. I don't know why, but when I first heard he was injured, I had the gut feeling he might be done for.

Just hope he does what is best for him. Be it play or no play. He has a long life ahead of him and you don't want to see him hurting all day every day buy the time he is 30. AP is too nice and extremely smart. He can go out and do whatever he wants.

I agree. This team is still weak inside, in my opinion.

Yes it is Matt. We were fortunate today that a bunch of guys didn't foul out. Our guards will have off nights.

More concerned about what Cal and the doctors think. Another body inside could have helped today.

Could be a ligament tear? Seems like if it were it would've already been announced. Not sure what UK gains by not announcing that the injury is severe unless they want to try and protect Poythress's future or something. But I've never heard of that happening where a player's injury is hidden like that.

I hope he's okay. However, I'm not so sure how much help he can provide. He's way too inconsistent (and has been his whole career) to keep giving him minutes and wondering which Poythress is going to show up. At least with Skal, Humphries, Lee and Willis, you kind of know what to expect. I see him nothing more than depth if he's able to go.

I was gonna include in the OP that Ryan Lemond, on the pregame show for the Georgia game, first broke the news that Alex had had surgery, and was out. He mentioned "partially torn meniscus", but that seems to be an injury that he would likely not come back from anytime soon...

He is inconsistent as we all know but he still can give you those 8 and 6 on average. What's going to happen to this team one of these days is Murray's not going to go out there and hit everything he throws up, and we're going to need that other guy to step in. Poythress can be that guy. He was that guy just two weeks ago at Kansas.

I just can't imagine this team making a run having to play Skal and Humphries these extended minutes. The guards can only carry you so far. Going to need Good Poythress in there somewhere down the line.

Mostly agree with WIll. I will say this. NCAA Tourney time is a time for guards. Look at Notre Dame last year, (1 big and the rest guards) they did greatl. Uconn a few years back won the whole dang thing with 3 guards. Now CAL is playing 3 and sometimes 4 guards (Matthews). We have a big to stretch the floor just like UConn or ND last year. If we can get some steady play from Lee, Skal and Humpherys then we will be in every game. Maybe not UNC game but most others. I hope we have Poythress also but we have been playing good the last few games without him. Heck we were out rebounded by 1 rebound yesterday. Not bad.
