Zen & the Art of Making the Perfect Player: Meet UK's Jamal Murray

Insane article about Murray and how he gets himself prepared to play:

LEXINGTON, Ky. — He'd traveled more than 600 miles, crossed the Canadian border and sat through a high school workout in an Ontario gym. Now, finally, it was time for Kentucky assistant Kenny Payne to shake the hand of the recruit he'd been so anxious to meet.

      How so?

WCS was into some odd things, but it wasn't like this. This is a guy who is doing virtually everything he can to get better at the game. The rap on Willie was always that he was more focused on outside interests.

      Murray is all basketball.

Amazing is about all you can say. I am beginning to believe that in the future when you talk about the Calipari era at UK that Murray may be the player we call the best all around player to play at UK during Cal's time. He does seem like a special player. We will start finding out for sure tomorrow night.

Like Will said Murray is all basketball. There were many times I wondered if WCS really like playing the game. The two are much different.

I wasn't talking about either one trying, or not trying, to improve their game. I was referring to each one marching to the beat of a different drummer.

Anthony Davis has a Darth Vader death lock on that title. I hope you're right, though.

You are right. It will be hard to over take Davis. But I really think Murray has a chance. We will start finding out tomorrow night. That's a perfect stage for him.

He's going to obviously be radically different than Davis just in terms of how stable of a player he is.

He does some weird things. Throws shovel passes from 30 feet away. Jacks up tough shots. Drives into traffic. The thing about Davis was that he was solid as a rock. Just never screwed up.

Murray isn't afraid to go rogue sometimes. But where they're similar is how electric they both are. Murray--and Skal too--jump out at you when you watch them. Murray will do a few things a game that make you just sit back and marvel.

The guy he's reminded me most of so far are maybe late Jodie Meeks and a little of John Wall. Wall had that uncanny end-to-end speed, but he was also a ferociously explosive athlete when he went up to make plays at the rim. Murray has that sort of power.

Murray will make turnovers. That's something he has to improve on. He throws a lot of one handed passes. I'm sure Cal is going ballistic over that alone.

A lot of Todd Marinovich-ness in that article. Push ups in the snow? Wow!
