That’s the problem with text! Can’t read tone! Thanks!

Instead they found a way to lose against Tennessee in 4 overtimes and got blown out at home by an 8-5 Mississippi State team. They also lost to an overrated South Carolina team by 2TD. South Carolina was ranked and at home when they played the Cats but they ended that season at 6-6 after dropping their final 5 games of the year.

I like that UK was competitive and they had chances to win in the last several years of his tenure but his career head coaching record is 130-156-4.

I digress, what was this thread about anyway? LOL

That is correct. In 4 seasons.

Of course, he had replaced Bill Curry, who never had a winning season in 7 years as the head coach at Kentucky and had a W-L record of 26-52.

And the three head coaches that immediately followed Mumme were

    Guy Morriss 9-14 W-L record

    Rich Brooks 39-47 W-L record

    Joker Phillips 13-24 W-L record

My point wasn't that Mumme was some sort of outstanding football coach....only that he sure was getting ripped when, in fact, he's a below average football coach in a long line of below average football coaches at the University of Kentucky. For Kentucky, he fit right in and was an average coach for the program.

Back on topic I hope and think a lot of the complaining is from trolls looking to yank some chains or get clicks

If you take away his first three seasons when he was rebuilding from the probation that Mumme and Claude Basset put us on he was 30-22

I agree - I'm now looking forward to the football season.

The basketball team is set. Hopefully much of the whining and complaining is over considering we ended up being one of the more successful programs building our roster for next year.

Time for me to go hang out on the football board unless the basketball team ends up booking some summer games or a trip.

Yeah my long winded way of saying that as well. I love every year of football. Always have. I just go in realistic to our football program. If Stein has many great years they I will be very happy. I will say this. If he does great for 3 or 4 years, NFL and the big dogs of College football will come a callin. Not saying he leaves, just saying opportunities will open always with coaches.

I am happy Stoops was here but he would not adjust the offense and had to go. He is not remembered as favorable because what we remember were the mistakes, 10 men on the field, the ugly games, no passing attack to speak of and such. Even Saban changed as the game changed.

Stein will be what he will be. We will find out over the next couple of years. Should be fun offense. If we are competitive in games with chances to win then he will be looked upon favorable. If we sputter and have tons of mistakes who knows.

Middling teams fans love style of play as they know they do not have much of a chance to be on top or are in the upper portion of their conference only once in a 4 to 6 year period. We have been a middling football from the get go. We have had spots (few and far between). We are 652wins / 662 losses / 44 ties. We are a below 500 all time football program. Can we be great ever. Maybe. Can we sustain some winning seasons back to back to back, doubtful. 9 SEC games, 1 Power 4 game and no easy week game will mean the middling teams will remain middling.

Hope Stein does well to great. But will not expect any major wins / losses changes for the most part. Just hope to see a competitive fun to watch football team.

Hal Mumme was brought in to entice Tim Couch to stay at UK. It worked. Mummeball was exciting from an offensive standpoint but downright embarrassing from a defensive standpoint. He was not a good head coach in that he cared zero about stopping the other team. However, he was a true innovator. Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, Mike Leach, and other coaches studied under him and used his offensive principles to produce some of the games most explosive teams. There was another feature on ESPN several years ago (I don't think what I am leaking is the same article). Mumme had a lot of flaws and his attitude towards defense would never make him a winner, but he changed the way college offenses played the game.

I'd also note that Rich Brooks was 39-47 (16-40 in the SEC) and people revere him.

Typically a 7-6 record each year...with the exception of his last year when he went 2-9. Mark Stoops had similar records every year with the exception of a couple of 10-3 seasons. You can go back to Fran Curci and see losing records for him except for back-to-back 10-1 and 8-3 seasons. Find me a UK football coach with a really impressive career record and I'll be both shocked and impressed.
