My earliest memories of Bear was at Alabama. For many years I was actually an Alabama football fan...mainly because of his ties to UK and because Alabama beat Penn State in the Sugar Bowl (famous "Goal Line Stand" game) to keep Penn State from winning the national championship. I didn't like Penn State because I was a Dallas Cowboys fan, hated the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh was in Pennsylvania...."Penn" State! Ahhh....the logic of an 11-12 year old kid...LOL.
I'm sure this was way before your time, and I don't know if you'll be impressed or not, but coach Bear Bryant had a 60-23-5 record at UK over eight seasons. His successor Blanton Collier had a 41-36-3 record over eight seasons as well. For those like me who still view UT as our rival coach Collier was 5-2-1 against UT which is quite impressive.😀 1Leave a comment:

Typically a 7-6 record each year...with the exception of his last year when he went 2-9. Mark Stoops had similar records every year with the exception of a couple of 10-3 seasons. You can go back to Fran Curci and see losing records for him except for back-to-back 10-1 and 8-3 seasons. Find me a UK football coach with a really impressive career record and I'll be both shocked and impressed.Leave a comment:

I agree Jload. I'd much rather win 2-0 than lose 50-49.Reading some of the things said here about Mumme confirms something I've long suspected. A lot of our fans are more interested in " exciting" football than winning football. He was a horrible head coach made crazy decisions that cost us numerous games. I am sure Stein will not emulate him. I guess I'm old school but a 14-10 WIN is much more satisfying than 48-42 loss.👍 1Leave a comment:

Oh, I think the program will be much better than it was under coach Mumme. I expect this team to have good def. and special teams play as well as an exciting off.Leave a comment:

The love for Mumme was because he brought excitement back to the program, not because he was looked at as some great coach. The year before, Curry scored 14, 3, 3, 0, 7, 14 and 14 points in his first 7 games when he was told he wasn't coming back the following season. The love for him was that he brought excitement back.
UK football needs that desperately now and Will Stein seems to be the guy to do that. Let's just hope his on the field success is better than Mumme's.Leave a comment:

Always happy for Football Season in the Bluegrass!!!!
But for me, I like the info we get over the summer for the basketball and football teams. Every day is UK day for some sort of news. I really hope Pope gets off his bum at the beach and gets a foreign trip and a few games. Heck even a 2 or 3 game short trip to Bahamas or Mexico would be good. Problem is probably the World Cup in US Mexico and Canada. But who knows.Leave a comment:

AMEN.. Can't wait for football season..Im so excited to see what Coach Stein can doFolks we got the player many said we had to have to have a chance at a successful season. It now appears coach Pope has a solid roster to work with. Let's just enjoy the summer and the upcoming fb season (if you're a fb fan) and look forward to the bb season with renewed hope and interest and put the fussing and grumbling aside.Leave a comment:

Because we sucked before Hal Mumme arrived and even though recruiting was weak and defense was non existent, Hal Mumme ball gave us hope and it was exciting. It was the Loyola Marymount of Football..
In the SEC you can have the best QB, Running Back, Tight End, Slot1 and still be lucky to win 8 game if you don"t have a defense.
Back then, they actually let you play football and take the QB's head off.
I can't speak for everyone else but back in high school in the late 80's our number one goal as Players in the locker room was to take the QB's head off and knock him out of the game. That was the Dopamine, the adrenaline, the satisfaction of playing football...Leave a comment:

I have never understood the love for Hal Mumme. We had who the NFL thought was the top QB and only won 8 games. I honestly believe we have fans that would rather lose 52-49 than win 17-10.

People have long said that UK has the greatest fans in college basketball. From what I've seen lately, we look more like the worst fans. It might be a very vocal minority (or maybe some of them aren't really UK fans), but there seem to be so many people who will bend over backwards to spin every little bit of info into a negative. There seem to be many people actively rooting against our team just so we can get another new coach. I agree with the OP. It's sickening.👍 1Leave a comment:
