The last time Kentucky had four consecutive 10-loss seasons? Tubby Smith’s last two years and Billy G’s only two years, considered one of the worst stretches of Kentucky Basketball.

That's something that should never happen once, much less 4 in a row.

The dominant UK basketball performance is gone.

It was never a worry that UK would have that many losses in a season for many years. Now, it's common.

As a UK fan for about 50 years, I’ve only been happy 3 times at the end of the season. I was too young to remember ‘78, so ‘96, “98, and ‘12 are the only years I could truly say I enjoyed the whole season. Most everyone here is probably in the same boat. Only 8 seasons have ended to our satisfaction. Such is the life of a UK fan.

Whereas this is totally true, you have to wait till early April to know if you are champions. I can honestly say that every season when I feel we have a legitimate contender is a blast of a season for me. I was born in 1972. I thought we had a shot every season of my early childhood. Certainly didn’t win it every, or even most years, but as long as I thought we might it was fun.

That feeling has been missing for quite a while. And it’s a shame because whereas the history of the program may mean nothing to today’s talented kids, we still have the facilities and NIL dollars that should make us an elite program. Starts at the top. Ready for Mitch to move on. Pope will get another year whether he deserves it or not. Throw the bank at Stokes and the top portal players. If it’s a failure again then move on to another coach.

Now winning a title is probably tougher than it used to be. Used to only be a relatively small number of schools with the resources and history to build champions. Now all it takes is some deep pocket donors and Texas Tech and BYU are big names in whatever sport their donors prefer. So there may be 50 programs with as much buying power as we have. But we should always be able to get back into contention with the right personnel moves. Especially if most big donors are spending their cash on football.

I am not a title or bust type of guy. Of course winning the title is the end goal, but that is no easy feat in the world of college basketball. What irks me is how we have fallen in just about every category, see my above post for some reference. It has been over 10 years since we entered the NCAAT with a #1 seed, that is insane to me. Over 10 years of not having a regular season considered top 4 in the nation. SEC football schools are outperforming us in conference and out. I saw someone say Duke has 5 losses the last two seasons, we currently have 22. The other blue bloods are doing fine, other SEC schools are doing just fine, I am growing tired of the excuses I keep seeing being made for UK basketball.

I agree with posts 8 & 9 above. It's not realistic for the fans of any sport at any school to expect a NC every year. If the teams I pull for are exciting to watch and competitive I feel that is all I can reasonably expect. If a NC happens to come along every so often great, if not I can still live with the results.

Yes that’s deflating. And it’s basically the reason my sons watch more NBA than UK basketball.

Cal’s dream of changing family’s lives sounds great. As if he actually made 5 star players into NBA players. But he also has brought change to one generation passing along the fever pitch love af UK basketball into the next. I’m sure it’s not dead. But it’s not the same. Pope dreams of bringing that back. I love him for that. But I don’t necessarily believe he’s going to be the guy to do it.

UK has lost 10 or more 15 times in the last 26 years. I'm not happy about this fact but let's not act like it is all Pope's fault or unheard of.

Your post really hit home. I never thought I'd live to see the Cats with such a mediocre, at best, recent history.
