Mark Pope's gamble on Jayden Quaintance could cost Kentucky basketball

If he doesn’t play another minute this season — and there’s no serious indication that he will — his UK career could end having scored just 20 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in four games.

Imagine where the Cats would be right now if they had another 40% shooter from 3-point range, like a Koby Brea, to add to the rotation. Or if they had a true backup point guard who could have stepped forward after Jaland Lowe’s season-ending injury.

A general manager would have made sure the Cats had at least two players at every position before taking a chance on an injured player like Quaintance. Whatever amount they spent to get him to Lexington surely could have secured a player who would be contributing to the rotation right now.

Four games. 20 points. 20 rebounds.

It may be the most difficult lesson Pope takes from this season.

The importance of NIL deployment in this era CANNOT be overstated.

Amazing to me that some still can't comprehend this.

In the grand scheme of things, we are nothing. We are no one.

    Everything is artifice.

And if you come to terms with that, you will find peace

It was a gamble. And it clearly didn’t work out. Perhaps it would have worked out fine if he had not been dunking in flip flops after 4 months or so and played in games well before the typical time frame for his injury? No one knows now. Maybe had he rested longer he would be full strength by now.

Between him, Lowe and Butler with known injuries upon signing I agree there needs to be better physical exam reports BEFORE UK pays them.

Anything can happen in sports though. Many wished his $ had gone to Caleb Wilson instead. Now he too is laid up. Says he’ll be back, but the nation championship is like 6 weeks away. Bones take time to heal. BUT, obviously that was NOT an injury anyone knew about when he signed. Or joined. Not sure anyone signs anything meaningful anymore. Think you just show up, play a little and cash checks.

I don't think Lowe missed a game at Pitt and Butler played every single game his junior and senior year at SDSU. Butler did break injure his wrist his sophomore year, but that was his only injury in 4 years. Am I missing something about those two having known injuries when they signed with UK? Nothing in a physical would have shown up for those guys and they knew JQ was a total gamble...and unfortunately turned into a bad gamble.

It was reported when Lowe’s shoulder popped out of place the first time at UK that it was not first time it had happened. I was thinking Butler’s was a recurrent issue as well but that could be wrong.
