Lighthouse always claimed Cal loved for Shows to call his games. I never really saw the love between those 2 but Lighthouse knew more than me about their relationship. Lighthouse was the voice of reason while we ranted about particularly egregious calls. I didn’t always agree with him but he did keep us reminded of the difficulty of the job of the officials. Especially in really physical or high emotion rivalry games.

RIP Steve—but last nights crew could have done A LOT better.

Is there really that much of a lack of capable officials? I mean I understand when junior high's and high school's have hard times finding them since they are paying $30 or less a game, but how does a conference like the SEC continually let officials like this hang around. I am sure they pay them pretty good money and you would think there would be a pool of lower level, mid major officials that are trying to work there way up to this level.

I also remember Lighthouse talking about how coaches could "blacklist" a certain amount of officials a year that they can request them to not do our games, but not sure the details on that. If that is possible I am not sure how Shows isn't at the top of that list.

I wish refs got cycled in and out of conferences, divisions, levels, etc. more. I feel we have been watching the same refs for decades and decades.

My only disagreements with Lighthouse came when he defended Doug Shows. I respected Steve's perspective but I'll never, ever understand a defense of Doug Shows.

I do vaguely remember when a coach could blacklist up to 2 refs per year. I don't know if this is still the case. I do remember Cawood talking about it
