Former UK great Lou Tsioropoulos died yesterday at 85. He was a key player on the 1954 UK team that went undefeated.

When I was in the 5th grader we would walk up to a classmate and ask them to spell Lou's last name.

I used to play basketball A LOT at various parks across Louisville in my teens through my early 30's. I remember a time at Iroquois Park and up walks this older fellow and he was asking guys who had next if he could run with them. Nobody let him run with them. If you play ball then you know the deal. "Well, you can play if my buddy doesn't lose." On down the line he went and my buddy and I had like 3 nexts down so we let him run with us. If memory serves me correctly, we didn't lose. We didn't lose because we had Lou. I had no idea who he was until someone off to the side told us who he was. That "old man" proceeded to school everybody on that court. I'll never forget it. I remember telling my Dad that I played with him. His eyes lit up and he told me how special of a player Lou was. A good friend of mine that I work with told me that he was a staple at various mens leagues in the Dixie Highway area for years. More often than not he was the best player on the court. I believed him because I saw how dominant he was as an older gentleman on the various courts in Louisvilles South End.
